Infertility is a common health issue affecting about 10% of women in the United States. It's defined as the inability to get pregnant after one year of trying (or six months if a woman is 35 or older). Infertility can be caused by a variety of factors in women, men, or a combination of both.
Common Causes of Infertility in Women
Ovulation Disorders:These are problems with the release of an egg from the o***y and are the most common cause of female infertility. Examples include:
Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS): A hormonal disorder causing irregular periods and cysts on the ovaries.
Hypothalamic Dysfunction:Problems with the part of the brain that controls hormone production for ovulation.
Premature Ovarian Failure: When ovaries stop working and periods stop before age 40.
Tubal Factors:Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes can prevent s***m from reaching the egg or the fertilized egg from reaching the uterus. Causes include:
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): An infection of the reproductive organs often caused by sexually transmitted infections.
Endometriosis: A condition where uterine-like tissue grows outside the uterus, potentially affecting the tubes.
Previous ectopic pregnancy: A pregnancy outside the uterus.
Uterine Factors Issues with the uterus itself can make it difficult for a fertilized egg to implant or grow. Examples include:
Fibroids: Noncancerous growths in the uterus.
Polyps:Benign growths on the uterine lining.
Uterine abnormalities; Present from birth (congenital).
Cervical Factors:Problems with the cervix can prevent s***m from entering the uterus.
Unexplained Infertility:In some cases, no specific cause for infertility can be found.
Risk Factors for Female Infertility
1. Age: Fertility naturally declines with age, especially after 35.
2.Smoking:Significantly damages eggs and reproductive organs.
3. Excessive alcohol use:Can interfere with ovulation.
4. Being overweight or underweight: Can disrupt hormone balance.
5. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs): Can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease.
6. Exposure to environmental toxins: May affect fertility.
7. Genetics:Family history of early menopause or certain conditions.
