Hospice Africa Uganda HOSPICE AFRICA UGANDA (HAU) is an NGO founded in 1993 with a vision of Palliative Care reaching all in Africa.

HOSPICE AFRICA (HA) was inspired by witnessing the terrible suffering of those people with cancer sent home to die without support, in Nairobi in 1990-2.. Palliative care from Nairobi Hospice could support these patients and allow them to dies without pain and at peace with their families and their God. But this was a problem throughout Sub Saharan Africa, not just Nairobi. Thus HA was founded for palliative care provision in Africa. This service was to be based on a model in an African country and Uganda was chosen for the model in 1993. Hospice Africa Uganda is now the model for service, education, research and promoting excellent but affordable clinical care appropriate to the cultures in Africa. Hospice Africa (HA (UK)) was registered in UK in 1993 as Hospice Africa (UK). Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) was registered in Uganda in 1994. HOSPICE AFRICA UGANDA: is the Model Hospice for Hospice Africa, locally referred to as Hospice Uganda.

33 Years of Compassion. 33 Years of Impact. 33 Years of Changing Lives.

Hospice Africa Uganda has been part of a journey rooted in compassion, dignity and a commitment to making every moment matter.

Today, we celebrate the incredible people behind that journey, our staff, patients, students, partners, supporters, volunteers, trainers and everyone whose dedication has helped us extend compassionate patient care, strengthen palliative care through training, and touch countless lives.

As we mark this 33rd anniversary, we say THANK YOU for being part of our story and for helping shape a future where everyone facing life-limiting illness can receive care with dignity, compassion and respect.

Here’s to the journey so far, and to the lives we will continue to touch together.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro, and all those mourning the passing of His Majesty Rukirabasaija Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

We are deeply saddened by this loss and join the nation in mourning a leader whose life and service touched many.

May his legacy of leadership, dignity and service endure, and may the bereaved family and the people of Tooro find strength, comfort and peace during this difficult time.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Students from the Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care in Africa (IHPCA), including the Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), MSc Year 1 and Diploma in Clinical Palliative Care (DCPC) cohorts, took part in a case conference as part of their learning journey.

The session provided an opportunity for students to connect classroom knowledge with real-world clinical experiences, engage in critical discussion, share perspectives, and strengthen their approach to patient-centred palliative care.

Through such interactive learning experiences, IHPCA continues to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge, clinical competence and confidence to deliver compassionate, quality palliative care.

Does receiving palliative care mean giving up on treatment? Absolutely not.

Palliative care can be provided alongside treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, dialysis and surgery. Its focus is on relieving pain and other symptoms, improving comfort, supporting families, and enhancing quality of life while treatment continues.
