Uganda Autism & Down Syndrome Civitan Project

Uganda Autism & Down Syndrome Civitan Project Uganda Autism & Down Syndrome Civitan Project cares for and serves people born with Down’s Syndrome and their families.

CIVITAN CLUB of Uganda has recognized the special need for children with learning / intellectual disabilities. A child with learning disability lacks the ability to express him or herself, learn new skills, or cope with life independently. Such children are often segregated and neglected without proper medical care and education. Some cultural beliefs even suggest that children born with these con

ditions are a curse. Global statistics indicates that one in every 700 babies born suffer from the condition called ‘Down’s Syndrome’. In Uganda this may account for the greater majority of children with learning disabilities. Unlike other forms of disabilities such as blindness, deafness and other physical deformities, there is inadequate public policy on intellectual disability; and they are not specifically covered in the mainstream of People with Disabilities (PWD) who are legally provided for in the Constitution of Uganda. It is with this background that the Civitan Club of Uganda came up with the idea to promote a campaign against this belief and help the innocent children.
