Special Olympics Uganda is a national program that locates and develops different talents of children and adults with intellectual disabilities through sports. Special Olympics Uganda is affiliated to and accredited by Special Olympics International (SOI), with its headquarters in Washington D.C. Founded in USA in 1968 by Lady Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Special Olympics has reached more than 160 coun
tries worldwide. Since its inception in Uganda, Special Olympics has spread to 20 Sub-programs.To date,4777 persons with intellectual disabilities have been recruited into the program. This constitutes only 0.53% of the estimated 900,000 persons with intellectual disabilities in Uganda (Ministry of Health/ADD, 1999). Special Olympics is basically an athletes’ centered, volunteer-driven, family based, sports oriented international organization and depends mainly on internal fundraising drives and donations.
