WHAT MAKES A VALID MARRIAGE?

Saying "I Do" is not the most important part of getting married. Before you consider doing this, there are requirements that the law looks at before they can consider a marriage as being valid.

1. Venue: Every marriage must be at a licensed venue.

2. Time: The Ugandan law only allows weddings between 10am and 4pm.

3. Minister: Depending on the marriage you are entering; you need a licensed person to conduct it. This can be a religious leader, or a registrar of marriages or CAO (Chief Administrative Officer) – if you are doing it at a district other than Kampala.

4. Age: Only persons above 18 years can give their permission to marriage, so only those people (we call them adults) can enter marriage.

5. Consent: Only the two people getting married are allowed to give consent. However, some religions still require parental. If you intend to get married under that religion and this is a religious requirement, then you have to fulfil it.

6. Other existing marriage: Marriages are serious things and some marriages cannot be shared. There are polygamous (more than one wife) and monogamous (one spouse only) marriages. If you have entered a polygamous marriage, you cannot enter into the monogamous type except with the same person. And you cannot convert your monogamous marriage into a polygamous one.
