The GAVA Project

The GAVA Project A charity dedicated to satisfying the most basic need of hunger with the longer term vision........ In this sense, food truly is the beginning of everything.

Our name GAVA, comes from a Luganda proverb, “Gava mu kulya”, which means the source of energy, power, and wisdom is food. With a satisfied stomach comes the ability to have energy, to have an effectively functioning mind, and positive reasoning. GAVA operates in Kazo, which is one of four slums in Kampala, Uganda. It is a poor community with a high HIV rate and a high unemployment level. Lacking

in a healthy and nutritious diet exacerbates their situation. Therefore, the first step towards self-sufficiency is to decrease hunger. Families who are most greatly affected by poverty are enrolled in our Nutrition Program. This consists of monthly food deliveries of basic food staples, enabling people who once went without food for days, to gain hope of a brighter future. Along with providing food, GAVA empowers the community through educational seminars, mentoring, and various self-sufficiency projects.

The team revisits the procurement plan and budgets every month. This is because our funds are affected by foreign exchange rates and price fluctuations.

Thank you Silja Thor Silja Thorbjornsdottir and your team for making food supplies distribution a continuous program. Thank you team KICVOP-Uganda and Stichting Kicvop Nederland for implementing.

We expect to deliver twice this month due to internal operational abnormalities.

Your Small Gesture = A Big Impact.

Imagine if all the individuals you're following did that for you. That small gesture of engagement could be the traction your post needs to reach the right people. And the best part? It is free. A single click will do. That's how powerful your support can be. We need the same for this post. We kindly ask for a second or 2 of your time.

Children deserve a space that inspires learning, sparks friendship, and nurtures a sense of belonging. And with your support, we are committed to giving that and more to the children in Kazo. Please share our cause with a friend, family or an acquaintance.

How You Can Make a Difference with Just One Click.

But here's the thing: we can all change this. We can actually help each other with the simplest of actions—by *liking*, *commenting*, or *sharing* posts. That's it. No fancy gestures or big investments of time. Just a simple click that costs a second or 2, but could mean the world to someone trying to make a difference. It can amplify a cause, it can keep a posting visible, and it can help aid an individual who might be under the radar.

Please do the click on this post, it will mean a world to us.

The Truth About Low Engagement on Facebook.

It's a fact we must all face—more followers, fewer responses. It's as though the bigger the crowd, the quieter they are. But why? Why would individuals follow by the masses, then have nearly none of them respond? Whether you're promoting a cause you believe in, a charity that matters to you, or merely something that needs more attention, this lack of response seems disheartening and it grows day by day.

The Battle Between Social Media Figures and Engagement

Have you ever posted something on Facebook and felt like you were speaking to an empty room? Your profile might be accumulating followers, yet when the moment arrives to share something meaningful, the likes, comments, and shares all seem to vanish into thin air. It's frustrating, right? Especially when you know that the message you're sharing is worthwhile and could potentially make a tangible difference.

Well, your support to the link below will directly help us create a safe, welcoming space that nurtures curiosity and collaboration—laying the foundation for brighter futures for the children in Kazo.

This is Rose, Joshua's mom (Joshua is one of the KICVOP sponsored children over the years). On her lap are some of the school requirements a child MUST have at every beginning of the semester/term (every three to four months). The list is really long and it poses a huge burden on parents and guardians.
Our school project aims at lessening this burden by minimising the list to only what the children need to enhance their learning environment. Join us on our cause to make education accessible and affordable.

Our Story

GAVA is a non-profit operating in Uganda and the Netherlands with supporters around the world. Our name, GAVA, comes from a Luganda proverb “Gava mu kulya” which means the source of energy, power and wisdom is food. In this sense, we truly believe that food is the beginning of everything. GAVA operates in Kazo, which is one of four slums in Kampala, Uganda. The majority of the Kazo community live below the poverty line and lack basic necessities. Yet these people are kind and giving, committed to supporting each other to become self-sufficient. Since the start of GAVA in 2014, GAVA has provided meals for up to 150 people (over 20 families) in dire need via the nutrition program. The program significantly improves the overall welfare of these families and enables them to channel their limited resources to create sustainable livelihoods for themselves.

In 2015, we launched a second program through which we are providing training and support to entrepreneurs and have already established five small, yet successful businesses such as charcoal, fish and chips, and vegetable business.

In 2018 we will expand the new program to provide structured and scalable micro-investment support in Kazo and beyond.

Investing in local entrepreneurs increases our impact and truly changes the lives of those in need. With your support, we can help create a better future.
