The real criminals are rich, powerful and mighty. They live in posh neighborhoods.
They saunter through the VIP section of Entebbe Airport unmolested.
They drive fuel guzzlers on pot-holed roads. They are given red carpet reception at functions. In churches, they are given front seats and are the first ones to take holy communion, because they will leave behind a big cheque or bulky envelope.
They steal from the poor and no one touches them. They steal from HIV and TB patients and no one calls them to order. They murder and abduct citizens and no one points a finger at them. After committing one heinous crime, they are rewarded with a promotion or transferred to another department to commit more crimes.
They are so detached from the suffering of an ordinary citizen! They drive with their car windows up, and return to their heavily guarded gated houses. If you do not call them Honorable, they feel insulted- belittled!
They only wake up when an ordinary citizen tries to call them out. "Who are you to point a finger at our plate?", they say. Like a cow throwing off flies with its tail when it is eating grass, they step on any one who dares ask them to stop the plunder....to stop the crimes.
They don't care whether you're a young mother like Olivia Lutaaya. They don't care that you're a teacher of religion like Muhuydin Sanya. They don't care that you're the sole bread winner of your elderly mother like Bobi Young. They don't care that you're suffering from a stroke like Muganza Joseph. They don't care that you are young women like the ten women recently remanded to Luzira.
To them, the worst crime is not stealing iron sheets meant for the most poor people in Karamoja. To them, the worst crime is telling them to have some shame and stop committing these vile crimes.
Things can only turn around if the ordinary folks rise up and reclaim their nation from the thieves of their future.
