Uganda’s 2024 HIV statistics demand more than concern, they demand action(Source: Uganda Aids Commission HIV factsheet 2024)
• 15,000 new HIV infections occurred among young people aged 15–24
• 4 out of 5 of these were adolescent girls
• Every week, 730 Ugandans are newly infected
• Teenage childbearing stands at 28–30% in the Busoga and Bukedi regions, compared to 15% in regions like Kigezi
• 12.4% of new infections are from mother to child transfer
What we are doing
At Hope Springs Health Foundation, we are responding by empowering 1,000 adolescent girls aged 12 to 14 in the Busoga region through a project focused on raising awareness about their sexual and reproductive health and rights, risks associated with cross-generational relationships, including teenage pregnancy, school dropout, and HIV infection.
How we are doing it
We use the UNICEF educational video “Sara: The Trap” to start conversations
We create safe group dialogue spaces for storytelling and peer learning
Sessions are led by trained female health workers who girls can relate to and trust
Girls learn about HIV, their rights, the risks of early sexual activity, and how to make informed choices
