This year’s World Adherence Day theme is: “Stay on track. Save your life.”
In our study with adolescents living with Type 1 Diabetes in Uganda, staying on track was not just about being told what to do.
We ran an 8-week programme involving both adolescents and their caregivers, which included:
● education on insulin use and diabetes
● practical demonstrations (like glucose monitoring and meal preparation)
● dietary guidance using local foods
● structured physical activity
One caregiver shared:
“Before, we just gave food when the child was hungry… now we know it must match the medicine.”
We also saw changes beyond food and insulin. Some adolescents who feared physical activity began to take part more confidently once they understood how to manage it safely.
Adherence is shaped by knowledge and support.
