In 2025, CIYOTA directly reached 21,759 individuals across Uganda (10,423) and the DRC (11,336) through education, youth empowerment, and agriculture.
With a 100% transition rate for 58 primary education candidates, 190 students sitting national exams in secondary education, and 218 new youth-led businesses launched, it was a year of impact and resilience.

From our Story Room series, meet Ntakamaze Nziyonvira, who became a refugee at 11 after moving from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Uganda in 1998. He faced major obstacles growing up, including limited access to education, with only two schools in the settlement, long walks to attend classes, and a language barrier that made learning even harder.

He also witnessed how girls faced greater challenges, often burdened with more responsibilities than boys. These experiences shaped his decision to return and give back to the same community. Today, he leads CIYOTA in providing quality education to children and youth still facing these challenges.

CIYOTA's Early Childhood Development and Primary School has become a model so effective that it has been replicated across 7 other refugee schools in the Kyangwali Refugee Settlement. And at the secondary level, CIYOTA runs its own school while supporting 3 more, opening doors for both refugee and host community learners. But what makes CIYOTA different isn't just the classrooms. It's the culture. We go back, we sit with the communities we serve, we listen, and we reflect.

At our recent gatherings for the Breaking Barriers and Family Business for Education projects, participants shared milestones, experiences, and reminded us why this work matters. Before 2022, Kyangwali Refugee Settlement had just ONE secondary school for over 13,000 refugee youth, built by UNHCR. Fewer than 1,000 could attend. The rest were left behind, and CIYOTA refused to accept that; the narrative was then changed. With the support of the Mistry Family, in collaboration with Street Child, CIYOTA built a second secondary School to address the gap. The Mistry Family funded the administration block, housing the computer lab, sickbay, and staff offices. In just five years, the school grew from 148 to over 1,300 students, with more classrooms and labs to match. That growth is the Mistry Family's legacy.

Last week, the Family and Street Child toured CIYOTA schools and left CIYOTA students with words that will not be forgotten: "Education opens the door to a better life." Thank you, Mistry Family, for believing in every child before the world even knew their name. 🙏
