A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for the 5th Annual Uganda Sickle Cell Convention 2026. Your participation, insights, and commitment made this gathering a remarkable success.

We were honored to bring together key stakeholders from across Uganda and beyond to strengthen collaboration in advancing sickle cell awareness, advocacy, research, and quality care. We are especially grateful that the convention was officially opened by the Hon. Minister of State for Primary Health Care, whose support reaffirmed the government's commitment to improving the lives of people living with sickle cell disease.

Together, we are building hope and creating lasting change.

"Call to Every Sector" By the Guest of Honour, Hon. Dr. Charles Ayume, State Minister for Primary Healthcare.

Call to Every Sector

As we embrace this year's theme, "Building Sustainable Sickle Cell Support Systems in Uganda and Beyond Using a Multisectoral Approach," I call upon every sector to play its part. Sustainable solutions will only be achieved when we work together with a shared purpose.

I wish to express my sincere appreciation to Raising Hope International Friends for creating and sustaining the Uganda Sickle Cell Convention over the past five years. This convention has grown into a vital national platform that brings together government, healthcare professionals, researchers, development partners, civil society, the private sector, and families affected by sickle cell disease. Through this platform, knowledge is shared, partnerships are built, innovation is encouraged, and collective action is strengthened. Government values this collaboration and looks forward to continued partnership as we work together to improve the lives of all people living with sickle cell disease in Uganda.

To Buganda Kingdom and all our cultural institutions, your influence reaches deep into our communities. I commend His Majesty the Kabaka of Buganda for championing the fight against sickle cell disease. I encourage all cultural leaders to promote premarital genotype testing and genetic counselling, just as they successfully championed HIV prevention. Your leadership can help prevent future generations from unnecessary suffering.

To our religious leaders, your guidance shapes families and communities. I urge you to integrate sickle cell education, premarital testing, and genetic counselling into your marriage preparation programmes. Let every couple make informed decisions before beginning their family journey.
To the media, continue to tell the stories of people living with sickle cell disease accurately, consistently, and compassionately. Your reporting has the power to dispel myths, reduce stigma, and inspire action. Awareness must remain a continuous national conversation.

To our private sector and development partners, I thank you for your continued support.
