⚠️ Even the most progressive refugee systems are under pressure. Uganda is proof.
Uganda has long championed “African solutions to African problems,” hosting nearly 2 million refugees with a self-reliance model. Yet, despite its inclusive framework, the system faces severe strain:
Funding shortfalls threaten food, shelter, and healthcare
Donor attention shifts to new crises like the Gulf conflict
Resettlement quotas and humanitarian resources tighten
This illustrates a persistent inequity in global refugee governance: countries in the Global South bear disproportionate responsibility for crises often driven by geopolitical conflicts far away.
The lesson is clear: progressive refugee policies require sustained international support.
