From Survival to Prosperity ;One Hive at a Time

In 2022, in Omugo II village, Rhino Camp refugee settlement, something quietly extraordinary began.

Refugees and host community members people who had every reason to give up chose a different path. They pooled their courage, started with just 50 local beehives, and called themselves the "Success Bee Farmers Group".

They didn't have much experience. But they had each other.

With training and support from LM International and the Bee a Champion II consortium (TUNADO, World of Bees & Woord en Daad), they learned. They practiced. They grew.

Today, 200 hives. 264 litres of honey harvested. Buyers coming from within the settlement and beyond because word travels when something is made with this much heart.

But here's what the numbers don't capture:

The father who can now pay school fees. The neighbour once a stranger who is now a business partner. The moment a displaced person grows from "how do I survive today?" to asking "how do I grow tomorrow?"

That shift, is the real harvest. 🍯

This is what happens when knowledge meets resilience, and when communities refuse to be defined by their circumstances.

In Agago District, women participating in the LM International ‑Spacerpad initiative are stepping into new possibilities, pairing menstrual health knowledge with practical skills like tailoring and soap making. Through this initiative, what began as a hygiene-focused project in is now opening doors to improved livelihoods, income generation, and stronger community leadership for long‑term sustainability.
“As I learned to sew and make soap, I realized I was gaining more than skills, I was gaining control over my future,” one participant shared🥳🥳.
This holistic approach shows that when women have access to the right tools, training, and trust, they create their own pathways to dignity, economic stability, and resilient communities. The community says it best: “Invest in a woman, and you change an entire society and generations to come.”

🌱Livelihood enhancement is more than a just project activity it is a lifeline. It is a key pillar in helping refugees rebuild their dignity, strengthen their resilience, and create pathways to self-reliance.

Today, even in the peak of the dry season in Rhino Camp, households continue to earn a living by selling fresh green vegetables, a powerful reminder that when communities are empowered, possibility thrives even in the harshest conditions.

Through the Empowering Rural Livelihoods Project for refugees and vulnerable host communities, LM International Uganda has supported farmers to embrace year-round production. This has not only boosted household incomes but has restored hope, purpose, and independence.

🌍Climate change is no longer a distant threat, it is an undeniable reality and communities everywhere must build resilience to withstand its impacts.

LM International Uganda has taken decisive action in Rhino Camp refugee settlement, installing four irrigation systemsđź’§to support refugees and vulnerable host communities.

These systems are more than technology, they are instruments of empowerment. With year-round access to water, families will cultivate vegetables at a commercial scale 🌱, turning adversity into opportunity.

This will strengthen food security and provide new income streams for refugees and nationals. At a time when donor aid is dwindling, sustainable solutions like this delivers independence, dignity, and hope. đź’š

Through this initiative, LM International Uganda is cultivating resilience, boosting livelihoods, and proving that communities can thrive even in the face of climate change.

From Bees to Ashes: A Refugee’s Livelihood Lost Amid Uganda’s Harsh Realities
In Uganda, refugees currently receive less than USD 3 per month in support — a stark reality that leaves many struggling to meet even their most basic needs. Against this backdrop, innovative livelihood projects have become lifelines.
Take the story of Amule Simon, a refugee from Omugo Village 4. In 2023, Simon embraced beekeeping after training by LM International Uganda under the Bee a Champion II project. With 32 local hives and 28 thriving colonies, his apiary provided honey and beeswax that sustained his family amidst shrinking donor support.
Tragically, on January 15, 2026, a fire gutted Simon’s apiary overnight, wiping out not just his hives but his entire source of livelihood in the settlement camp. His loss is a painful reminder of how wealth-eroding practices like bush burning devastate both people’s hard-earned progress and the environment.
Simon’s story underscores the urgent need to strengthen awareness, protect alternative livelihoods, and invest in resilience-building initiatives for refugees who are already living on the margins.
CTA: Simon’s story is not just about loss — it’s a wake-up call. We must invest in refugee livelihoods, raise awareness against destructive practices like bush burning, and rally support for resilience-building initiatives. Join us in amplifying this message and driving change.

As Uganda continues to grapple with the devastating impacts of climate change on food production, refugees living with disabilities face even greater challenges including limited access to arable land, frequent loss of crops due to droughts and floods, and barriers to engaging in labor-intensive agriculture.

To promote sustainable and inclusive livelihoods, LM International Uganda today distributed 53 Kenya Top Bar (KTB) beehives to refugees with disabilities in Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement.

This initiative is aimed at empowering them to embrace beekeeping as a climate-resilient, accessible, and sustainable source of income.
