Yesterday I saw a group of young girls dancing in a church building to a song that I don't know.
Looking at the choreography though, you could not necessarily differentiate it from that of the club setting.
But here's the thing, the church was never called to imitate the world. We were called to be the light of the world.
So how do we light up the world by imitating the world? Is it even possible?
When Christians begin copying the culture instead of influencing it, something is definitely wrong. Which is exactly what is happening right now.
Today, many people hear a song mention “Jesus” or “God” and immediately label it “gospel,” even when the message, spirit, and lifestyle behind it look no different from the world.
The dancing, the sensuality, the pride, and the atmosphere often resemble the club more than worship.
As believers, we must remember that not everything that mentions God glorifies Him.
Scripture says:
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” Romans 12:2ESV
We are called to be set apart.
Our worship should reflect holiness, reverence, and surrender to Christ, not entertainment patterned after worldly culture.
Jesus said:
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill can not hidden” Matthew 5:14ESV.
Light does not copy darkness, light changes darkness and not the other way.
This is not about being legalistic or condemning others. It is about discernment. As Christians, we should ask ourselves:
• Does this draw me closer to Christ?
• Does this reflect holiness?
• Is God truly being glorified in this?
• Am I being influenced by the world, or influencing the world for Christ?
The church does not need to become like the world to reach the world.
The power of Christianity has always been in a transformed life that looks different because of Jesus Christ.
