Receiving Favor from the Lord

“Now God had caused the official to show favor and compassion to Daniel.” (Daniel 1:9)

Everyone desires favor—especially the favor that comes from God. Favor opens doors, brings opportunities, and releases blessings. The Bible is filled with stories of ordinary people upon whom God’s favor rested, and the results were extraordinary.

Consider Joseph. The favor of God was upon him whether he was serving in Potiphar’s house, imprisoned, and eventually elevated to Prime Minister of Egypt. Abraham received God’s favor at the age of 99 when the Lord appeared to him and declared, “I will establish my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers” (Genesis 17:1-8). Mary was chosen above all women to be the mother of Jesus, greeted with the words, “The Lord is with you… you have found favor with God” (Luke 1:28-30).

How then does one receive such favor? Looking at the lives of Noah, Moses, Daniel, and others, it becomes clear that God’s favor is not earned by human perfection. These were not flawless people, yet God chose to show them mercy. As He declared to Moses: “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion” (Romans 9:15).

One other consistent mark of those who walk in God’s favor is humility. The Lord says in Isaiah 66:2:
“These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word.”

Charles Spurgeon captured it well when he said that God shows favor to those who seek Him by loving Him, honoring Him, and delighting in His Word. But we can also receive favor by boldly asking for it. The Psalmist prayed, “I entreat your favor with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise” (Psalm 119:58). And God promises:
“The Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless” (Psalm 84:11).

Today, approach God with humility and confidence. Walk in the assurance that the Lord Almighty is able and willing to show you favor.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, God of Abraham, Maker of heaven and earth, I come before You in humility. Show me Your favor and bless the work of my hands. Let Your compassion rest upon my life. I ask this in the mighty name of Jesus!

One in Christ!

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” – (John 16:33).

There is a well-known agricultural practice in which two plants are joined together to grow as one, especially when a weaker plant struggles to take root and flourish. This process is called grafting. One of the benefits of grafting is that the weaker plant begins to acquire the resilient characteristics of the stronger stock. Where it would have easily withered, it is strengthened by being joined to a healthier and more established stem. In time, the difference between the two may hardly be noticed.

As believers, we too have been grafted into the rootstock of Jesus Christ. “But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ” (Ephesians 2:13). Like receiving a new citizenship, being grafted into Christ comes with the full blessings of belonging to Him.

The Apostle Paul addressed Gentile believers who feared they would be treated as second-class citizens in God’s kingdom: “And this is God’s plan: Both Gentiles and Jews who believe the Good News share equally in the riches inherited by God’s children. Both are part of the same body, and both enjoy the promise of blessings because they belong to Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 3:6). Through Christ, we have been fully united with Him and are entitled to enjoy the blessings that belong to the children of God.

When a grafted plant faces strong winds, it is supported and sustained by the strength of the parent rootstock. In the same way, although we may face troubles and challenges in this world, we remain at peace because of our new life in Christ. He upholds us firmly, enabling us to withstand every storm and continue basking in the fullness of His glory, because we are deeply rooted in Him.

Prayer for today:
Lord Father in heaven, thank You for grafting me into Jesus Christ. Because I am rooted in Him, may I enjoy the fullness of Your blessings and the peace that comes from knowing He will uphold me through every challenge. Strengthen my faith to remain steadfast in every season. This I pray in Jesus’ name!

God’s correction

“The Lord corrects those he loves, as parents correct a child of whom they are proud” ( Proverbs 3:12).

When children first join school and begin taking lessons, they make many mistakes. Yet, to their delight, for most, there is always a teacher ready to correct them. Many would be disappointed if their work was never corrected. Much as they love the red ticks in their books, the cross marks are also appreciated. They show that someone is paying attention to their efforts and helping them improve.

Just as children have teachers and parents to guide them, we too have a Father who lovingly corrects us. Proverbs 3:12 says: “For whom the Lord loves He reproves, Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights”. Parents are also encouraged: “Correct your son, and he will give you comfort; He will also delight your soul” ( Proverbs 29:17). The Word of God itself is given, among other reasons, to correct us: “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness” ( 2 Tim 3:16).

God uses many ways to correct us. Sometimes He sends a Nathan into our lives—someone who tactfully points out a matter we had been blind to ( 2 Samuel 12). At other times, correction may come openly and directly, as when Jesus rebuked Peter: “Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns” ( Mathew 16:23).

Like children in school, we should not only expect correction but also appreciate it. Correction is a sign of God’s love and concern for us. As Scripture reminds us, “For the LORD disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child” ( Hebrews 12:6).

Prayer today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, as you correct those whom you love to save them from ruin, today I pray that I may welcome your correction in my life for my good. This I pray in Jesus’s name.

Protection through the valley

“A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you” ( Psalm 91:7).

Anyone who has walked through a dark valley will know how easy it is to lose hope because the way is uncertain. A valley looms with hills above often blocking sunlight and obscuring the pathway. The valley may also be teeming with all sorts of dangerous creatures, eager for prey. In the valley one can seem hopelessly lost.

But there is hope. The prayer of Psalm 91 is to seek refuge in the Lord whenever walking through the valley and then His protection will cover us. “I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness” ( Psalm 91:2-6).

The Bible has those instances of angels coming down to fight on our behalf. As they were about to cross the Red sea with the Pharaoh’s army pursuing them, “Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them” (Exodus 14:9), and all were delivered. So, through the valley, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” ( Hebrews 12:2). He will deliver us.

Prayer today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, as I walk through the valley, I take refuge in you, to deliver me, for you are the light of the way and have gone ahead of me, this I pray in Jesus’s name!

"He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay,
And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm" ( Psalm 40:2)

Have you ever been wounded! Sometimes people are wounded through physical battles, which can leave one down. But physical engagements are not the only cause of wounds. A person could survive a clash that leaves him wounded after being hurled some abuse. If you are betrayed by the one you trusted certainly that would leave you wounded.

A wound takes time to heal. There are wounds which if not treated fast can fester and become fatal. Wounds can be deceptive. One may dress up a wound with white bandanges and on surface it all looks clean but deep inside the sore is hurting so deep and badly.

There was once a man who was wounded- when he took matters of law in his hand and had to flee in the bush. "When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian, where he sat down by a well" ( Exodus 2:15). A wounded man who had grown up in a palace and for forty years would appear abandoned.

One day something happened. "God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!”And Moses said, “Here I am....Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob" ( Exodus 3: 4-5).

A wounded Moses was now lifted up and given a commission he had once longed for, when he had almost but given up on it. Your situation may not be particularly similar, but here is God lifting up a wounded man. Whatever wounds you may be hurting do not give up on God, for one day He will appear and lift you up, just as He did for Moses!

Prayer today: Lord Father God of Abraham, maker of heaven and earth, for whatever maybe the wounds I carry my faith remains in you for I know you are a God who lifts me up, this I pray in Jesus's name.

DAY BY DAY WITH JESUS: DAILY DEVOTIONAL

Created for a unique purpose

“all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be” (Psalm 139:13-16)

In today’s leading verse we see God knows us even before we are born and calls each one of us individually for a special role in His kingdom. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepares for us in advance” (Ephesians 2:10).

The prophet Jeremiah too noted, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5).
Writing to the Galatians, the Apostle Paul reminds them, “But he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace” (Gal 1: 15). The inference here being that the life Paul was marked even before he was born.

David noted that God knows every thought of ours from the beginnings. “Lord you have searched and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways” (Psalm 139:1-4). This all shows how we count in the eyes of God.

Today, no one should let the enemy limit you with feelings of inferiority. Someone who was “fearfully and wonderfully made” whom God knows all his thoughts, can’t afford to think of himself as less than any. Let us go out with the knowledge that not only are we uniquely formed but God has a special and distinct purpose for each one of us His children.

Prayer for today: Lord Father in heaven, today I pray that I know I am special created for a unique purpose to conform to the image of your
Son, Jesus Christ, and may it be!
