πŸ“š Education is not only about passing exams. It is also about helping children develop values, life skills, confidence, empathy, and the ability to make responsible decisions.

Today, partners gathered for the ALiVE National Advisory Committee (NAC) Meeting to strengthen collaboration around integrating Values and Life Skills (VaLi) into teaching, learning, and education systems across Uganda and East Africa.

Under ALiVE Phase III (2025–2030), partners are working to:

βœ… Equip teachers and parents with practical tools to nurture life skills
βœ… Strengthen teacher training and classroom practice
βœ… Promote gender-transformative and inclusive education
βœ… Improve assessment systems for values and life skills
βœ… Advocate for increased investment in holistic education

The initiative envisions reaching 10 million children across Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zanzibar by 2030, ensuring learners not only succeed academically, but also grow into resilient, responsible, and socially aware citizens.

As part of the implementation in Uganda, Luigi Giussani Foundation (LGF) is leading work on teacher training, classroom practice, and programme coordination.

Because education should prepare learners not only for exams, but for life.

From 19th–21st May 2026, Leaders in Teaching Uganda program partners came together for a safeguarding workshop facilitated by IIDC. One key takeaway for LGF was the need to make β€œDo No Harm” operational across the consortium, not just as a principle, but as a system embedded in how we work.

As the lead consortium partner, LGF recognizes that safeguarding risks can easily go unmanaged when reporting and response systems are unclear or inconsistent across implementation. This workshop reinforced the importance of strengthening a shared approach to safeguarding, ensuring concerns do not fall through the cracks between partners.

We are working to strengthen clear reporting pathways, improve documentation and follow-up, and enhance prevention and response mechanisms across the consortium. This means that when a safeguarding concern is raised, it is not delayed, overlooked, or left to individual discretion; it is owned, tracked, and responded to quickly and responsibly.

Safeguarding is not separate from the work we do. It is part of recruitment, training, leadership, community engagement, and system strengthening.

As the Leaders in Teaching program, we are working to prevent harm, address risks, and build safer environments for everyone involved in education

πŸ“š What happens when teachers are empowered, supported, and heard? Better learning happens.

Today, in partnership with the Aga Khan Foundation, we convened education stakeholders to disseminate findings from the Teacher Agency and Well-being Research Study, highlighting the critical connection between teacher wellbeing, professional support, and improved learning outcomes.

During the dissemination engagement, teachers affirmed that the findings accurately reflect the realities they face in schools and communities. Officials from the Ministry of Education welcomed the study as timely and relevant evidence to inform policy and action within Uganda’s education sector.

Education stakeholders also emphasized the importance of focusing on teachers, noting that while many studies concentrate on learners, the wellbeing and agency of teachers are equally essential to achieving better learning outcomes.

Key findings from the study include:
βœ… Supportive school leadership, clear policies, and adequate resources strengthen teacher agency
βœ… Higher teacher agency is strongly linked to greater job satisfaction
βœ… Teacher wellbeing and professional empowerment go hand in hand
βœ… Inclusive and supportive school environments enable teachers to perform at their best

The Schools2030 study (July 2024 – December 2025) was conducted jointly with Global Center for the Development of the Whole Child.

The study reinforces a simple but powerful message: when teachers are supported, learners thrive.

On Wednesday, together with our partners Oxfam in Uganda, we were pleased to host EDUFI at our head offices in Kampala during a field monitoring visit for the Regional Teachers Initiative for Africa (RTIA) project.

RTIA is an ongoing research initiative aimed at generating evidence on effective approaches to strengthen teacher wellbeing and retention in crisis-affected contexts.

The visit provided an important opportunity to reflect on project progress and strengthen collaboration to improve education systems in challenging environments.
