As I settled into my usual routine of long walks while listening to audiobooks, I stumbled upon Thomas Anderson's "The Vulnerable Man." The title alone sparked a sense of curiosity within me; vulnerability felt like a double-edged sword both dreaded and essential. With the author’s warm voice enveloping me, rich with sincerity and conviction, I felt invited into a deep and meaningful exploration of what it truly means to be vulnerable. Anderson’s storytelling made the lessons resonate, steering my thoughts in a profound way and nudging me to reflect on my own experiences and struggles with vulnerability.

7 invaluable lessons I gleaned, each one feeling like a personal revelation that could light a path for anyone willing to embrace their own vulnerability:

1. Accepting Vulnerability is a Strength, Not a Weakness. Anderson’s heartfelt exploration of vulnerability reminded me that displaying our true selves, with all our imperfections, can be incredibly empowering. His voice illuminated this idea, suggesting that embracing who we are flaws and all allows for genuine connection with others. This lesson hit home; in a world where we often mask our struggles, the real power lies in authenticity. It showed me that being open can foster deep connections, making us stronger together.

2. The Importance of Self-Compassion. Listening to the author share his personal experiences, I began to understand the significance of being kind to oneself. He articulated how self-judgment often stems from societal expectations. His compassionate tone shifted my mindset, encouraging me to extend the same grace I offer to others, to myself. This realization is crucial for anyone; self-compassion can transform our internal dialogues, leading to greater inner peace and emotional resilience.

3. The Power of Emotional Expression. Anderson’s discussions about emotional expression struck a chord with me. His anecdotes illustrated that bottling emotions can lead to internal chaos. His encouragement to ‘feel and express’ made me rethink how I handle my feelings. This lesson serves as a reminder for all of us sharing experiences with others, whether joy, sorrow, or frustration, can relieve emotional burdens and create pathways to healing.

4. Building Meaningful Connections. The author’s insights on forming connections prompted a deep reflection on my own relationships. He emphasized that vulnerability plays a critical role in intimacy; it invites trust and openness. As I absorbed his compelling narratives, I recognized the beauty in letting my guard down with those I cherish. This lesson is a call to action for anyone seeking deeper relationships when we share our vulnerabilities, we create bonds that are both meaningful and lasting.

5. Navigating Fear and Courage. In a particularly impactful section, Anderson spoke candidly about fear a theme that resonates with us all. His honest reflections on facing fears instilled a sense of courage within me, encouraging me to step beyond my comfort zones. This lesson serves a dual purpose; it not only highlights the inevitability of fear but also illustrates that courage is not the absence of fear but the decision to move forward anyway.

6. The Role of Community in Healing. Anderson beautifully depicted the role of community in overcoming personal challenges. His reminder that we don’t have to navigate vulnerability alone nudged me to seek support systems actively. The author’s relatable stories underscored the idea that sharing our struggles in community can have a healing effect. For anyone looking to grow through tough times, this lesson offers profound insight into the power of solidarity and communal strength.

7. The Journey is Ongoing. Anderson repeatedly emphasized that vulnerability is a journey, not a destination. His soothing voice gently reminded me that it’s okay to falter and that setbacks are part of the process. This lesson resonates so deeply because it invites patience and self-acceptance. It’s a comforting reminder for anyone on a personal growth path moments of struggle are just as important as moments.

Not everything in life can be dodged.
Storms will come, seasons will change, and some pain will knock at your door no matter how fast you run.
But the moment you stop resisting—and start facing it with open arms—you stop being a victim.
You become someone who grows through it.
Not because you wanted it.
But because you welcomed what was already here.

You've probably heard the advice 'Don't put all your eggs in one basket"...

When it comes to choosing a career, applying to university or even applying for a new job, having a backup plan is widely thought to be a good idea.

And although studies have shown that this approach does help to alleviate some of the psychological discomfort associated with uncertainty, it's also been shown to potentially hinder your performance by making you less driven to hit your primary goal.

The amount of ourselves that we can dedicate to an outcome - mind, energy and focus - is positively correlated with the likelihood of that outcome - something I like to call Plan-A Thinking.

I’ve traveled to 30+ countries as a journalist over the past few years and some of the most important things I learned never made it into a TV package. Here are a few:

1. The more time you spend in different countries, the harder it is to believe in black-and-white takes.

2. Reality is slow. Media is fast. That gap is where misunderstanding lives.

3. The most dangerous ideas aren’t lies. They’re half-truths that feel complete.

4. Many decisions that shape the world are made by people who are simply trying to meet a deadline.

5. People everywhere want the same things: dignity, security, and a future for their children.

6. You can learn more about a person by how they treat a driver than by how they lead a meeting.

7. The world moves fast — but wisdom still takes time.

8. No one sees themselves as a villain. Even the worst actions are often justified in someone’s mind.

9. Identity becomes sharper in foreign places. You learn who you are when you’re not the majority.

10. Experience isn’t the same as exposure. You can be everywhere and still miss everything.

I’d love to hear — what have you learned from your travels?
