At 20, We have empowered women to beat stigma and proudly share their stories to help others still battling cancer.

Today we celebrate one of our own - Rebecca Kagoya, UWOCASO member and Patient Navigator at Uganda Cancer Institute

"I feared the biopsy. But the biopsy saved my life."

Diagnosed at Stage I in 2016, Rebecca is now 8 years cancer-free and recruited as a UWOCASO volunteer guiding other patients through their journey at UCI.

She is proof that early detection saves lives.

Yesterday was a deeply moving and exciting day meeting Akello Grace Ocaya, a 50-year-old mother of five from Okang-ngic, Pece-Laroo Division, Gulu City.

Grace, who has been under Uganda Cancer Institute care home, is a true pillar in her community. Despite her own journey, she continues to offer psychosocial support — listening, encouraging, and connecting other cancer survivors in Kampala. Her resilience is a powerful reminder that healing is not just medical, but also emotional and social.

Yesterday's session was also an opportunity to reaffirm our advocacy commitment and to call the Coordinator to appreciate the incredible work Uwocaso (Uganda Women's Cancer Support Organisation continues to do in walking with survivors, caregivers, and communities through counseling, peer support, and linkage to care.

As we celebrate this spirit of survivorship and sisterhood, join UWOCASO in celebrating 20 Years of Impact!

We are marking this milestone with a UWOCASO Dance Workout o Friday 23rd October 2026 -dancing for health, for hope, and for every woman whose life has been touched by cancer. Come move with us, celebrate life, and stand with survivors.

TONIGHT: Self-Care for Non-Communicable Diseases - What Every Patient Should Know

Cancer is a Non-Communicable Disease (NCD). NCDs caused 43 million deaths in 2021 - 75% of all non-pandemic deaths globally, with most premature deaths in low and middle-income countries like Uganda.

oins Faith Nankanja Mukilbi as Key Speaker on the UAPO platform to unpack SAFE CARE: What Every Patient Should Know.

As a 24-year breast cancer survivor, Gertrude will speak on what self-care means for a cancer patient:

1. Know your body - Don't ignore a painless lump. Early detection saves lives.

2. Adhere to treatment - Complete treatment, attend follow-up, ask questions.

3. Live healthy after diagnosis - Good nutrition, physical activity, avoid to***co and alcohol.

4. Care for your mind - Chronic stress fuels NCDs. Seek psychosocial support.

5. Know your rights - Demand safe, affordable, respectful care.

As gets closer, @20 is spearheading a “Move for Her” campaign, to celebrate the unique stories of cancer survivors, 20 years of providing hope and sensitizing communities, increasing awareness about breast cancer through the joy and fun of dancing with learning breast cancer facts while exercising for cancer prevention and improving mental wellness and self-esteem for survivors.

On Friday 23rd October 2026 at Hockey grounds Lugogo.

Breast cancer can be successfully treated when detected and treated early, yet in Uganda, it continues to claim over 1500 lives every year with many living in agony and pain with advanced and incurable disease!

ONGOING AT UCI HOME CARE: TURNING CREATIVITY INTO CARE AND SUPPORT

At the Uganda Cancer Institute -Home care, based care is more than providing support — it is about restoring hope, dignity, confidence, and a sense of purpose among cancer patients and their caregivers.

As part of the Able+ Project – Women Component, Uwocaso (Uganda Women's Cancer Support Organisation survivors are providing psychosocial support through hands-on creative activities. Today, patients and their caregivers are learning how to make simple, practical hand wallets/pouches where they can safely keep their mobile phones, money, and other small valuables while waiting in the queue for treatment.

A small skill with a big impact!

These handmade pouches not only encourage creativity and interaction, but also help reduce the risk of misplacing personal belongings while patients and caregivers navigate their treatment journeys.

Most importantly, these activities create moments of joy, connection, and empowerment - reminding every patient and caregiver that they are not alone.

At Uwocaso (Uganda Women's Cancer Support Organisation , we believe that cancer patients and caregivers deserve dignity, hope, skills, and an opportunity to earn an income — even during difficult times.

Through our ongoing initiative at Uganda Cancer Institute UWOCASO trains cancer patients and caregivers in home-care skills and handmade crafts, helping them turn their skills into meaningful sources of income.

But there is still a great need.

Many of the patients and caregivers have requested training in making reusable sanitary pads — a practical skill that can promote dignity, reduce household expenses, and create an opportunity for income generation.

This is more than training. It is about restoring confidence, dignity and hope.

HER STORY: A MOTHER OF 4 FIGHTING CERVICAL CANCER IN GULU

She is 48. A mother of four. A widow.

Since 2019, she lived with pain, back pain and bleeding that wouldn't stop. She moved from clinic to clinic, treated for fibroids, but she never got better.

In July 2024, at St. Mary's Hospital LACOR Gulu Northern Uganda , she finally heard the truth: Cervical Cancer, Stage IB.

On 8th July 2024, she had surgery. It was successful - but she was sent home without counselling, without pain management, without referral for further cancer care.

Today, she still lives with severe back pain, heaviness in her abdomen, and fear. She cannot work. Her husband, a police officer, was killed in a robbery. She is raising 4 children alone, with almost no support.

Our Uwocaso (Uganda Women's Cancer Support Organisation counsellors found her, counselled her, and are following up. We urged her to return for medical review. But she needs transport, food, and care - and we cannot do it alone.

Her story is not just one story. It is the story of hundreds of mothers in villages who suffer in silence.
Cervical cancer is preventable. When found early, it can be treated. No woman should be abandoned after surgery.
