Crafting Hope Together at Uganda Cancer Institute Care Home

Yesterday, cancer patients, caregivers, security guards, and staff - women and men - came together for a skills development session at the UCI Care Home.

We learned practical craft-making skills we can do at home, with the hope of creating a source of income. From handmade earrings to personalized handbands, the room was full of energy and creativity.

One of the most touching moments? Seeing men make earrings for their wives and handbands with their loved ones’ names. 💕

Beyond income, this was about healing, self-expression, stronger bonds, and a whole lot of joy.

Skills for life. Crafts for healing. Community for support.

Skilling Brings Hope: Cancer Patients at UCI Care Home Learn Hair Band Crafting

Last week, the team from Uwocaso (Uganda Women's Cancer Support Organisation hosted a hybrid skilling and counseling activity at the Uganda Cancer Institute ((UCI) Care Home. The session brought together cancer patients and their caregivers for both emotional support and practical training.

During the activity, participants were taught how to make hair bands. The mood was filled with joy and gratitude as many said it was their first time learning a craft they could easily replicate at home.

“This skill will be very resourceful for income generation because the hair bands are easy to learn and practice,” participants shared. For many families facing the financial strain of cancer treatment, such skills offer a dignified way to start small businesses and support their households.

One patient from the Acholi Sub-region expressed her appreciation:
“Thank you, UWOCASO, for helping me identify my hidden talent.”

Thank you AFRON Oncologia per l'Africa ETS for making the Hospital visits happen.

We extend special thanks to Joyce Namubiru, a cancer survivor, for generously donating the skilling materials that made the training possible. Her support reminds us that survivors can also be changemakers in the community.

UWOCASO remains committed to empowering patients and caregivers beyond hospital walls, through counseling, skills training, and psychosocial support.

Yesterday and today Uwocaso (Uganda Women's Cancer Support Organisation kicked off a new initiative: training a network of breast cancer community champions Mende and Busukuma Sub county Wakiso district.
The goal is to catch breast cancer early and get women to care faster.
How it starts:
1. Health facilities - equipping staff with early detection skills.
2. VHTs - Village Health Teams become the bridge, bringing awareness and referrals straight to communities
Early detection saves lives.
By putting champions in clinics and villages, UWOCASO is making sure no woman gets left behind.

Happy National Heroes’ Day, Uganda 🇺🇬

Today we honor our true heroes: cancer patients and survivors.

To those who have beaten cancer: you turned fear into strength and showed us what resilience looks like. Your story gives hope to so many.

To those still carrying the burden of treatment, appointments, and hard days: your courage in showing up, in smiling through pain, in choosing hope again and again — that is heroism of the highest kind.

Uganda celebrates you today, not just for surviving, but for the light and strength you bring to all of us. You are our heroes, today and every day.

Congratulations to Uganda Child Cancer Foundation and Uganda Cancer Institute for the successful 4th edition of the childhood cancer color run.

It was an absolute honour for Uwocaso (Uganda Women's Cancer Support Organisation to be part of this memorable event under the theme: “Behind every step: A child story” Participating in this color run reminded us that survivors of childhood cancers are struggling with unmet needs silently.
Coming together not only empowers citizens with knowledge, but a commitment to support prevention, early detection and effective treatment of childhood cancers.

It is giving a chance to children fighting cancer to live positive, quality and productive lives beyond treatment.

Yesterday morning was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when a community comes together for its children.

We were honored to join Uganda Child Cancer Foundation for the at the Uganda Cancer Institute , alongside Dr. Diana Atwine PS Ministry of Health- Uganda
, Owek. Apollo Nelson Makubuya and Ms. Anne Juuko.

Beyond participating in the run, we also contributed resources to support this initiative and reaffirm our commitment to the cancer fight and partnership commitment.

Our message is simple and urgent: No child should die of cancer in Uganda.

That means advocating for more than treatment alone. It means pushing for holistic care that gives every child living with cancer - and their families - the support, dignity, and compassionate care they deserve.

Beating childhood cancer isn’t the work of one organization or one event. It takes all of us.

Every step run, every resource contributed, and every voice raised brings hope and life to these young heroes who face more than any child should have to.

Thank you to everyone who showed up and stood up for this cause. We’re in this for the long run.

Yesterday, Josephine and Rose UWOCASO survivors had the honor of visiting cancer patients and their caregivers through the UWOCASO’s ABLE+ project women component at UCI Home Care. As UWOCASO survivors, this experience reminded them how powerful hope, compassion, and shared stories can be in the cancer journey.

To every patient fighting bravely and every caretaker giving their all behind the scene you are seen, you are valued, and you are not alone. Your strength inspires more than words can express.

Yesterday’s home visit was a powerful reminder that care goes far beyond hospital walls. A UWOCASO cancer survivor, alongside a dedicated palliative care nurse from St. Mary's Hospital LACOR Gulu Northern Uganda spent time with patients and their families offering not just medical support, but hope, empathy, and understanding.

Listening to their stories, sharing in their struggles, and witnessing their strength was deeply moving. These visits bring comfort, dignity, and reassurance to those facing cancer, showing them they are not alone in their journey.
