SAU youth leaders are facilitating a workshop on rights and volunteerism for newly identified youth with disabilities in Kapchorwa. The participants were identified during a community outreach conducted by youth leaders in the first week of their visit to the district.

Today’s workshop included a few role models whose example the newly identified youth can learn from. The workshop becomes engaging when it is led confidently by the newly identified youth leaders themselves.

We are already at the stage of developing future role models who will take on the responsibility of mentoring other youth with disabilities across the district and the country.

Today is the final day of a two-day sensitization meeting conducted by SAU through the Youth Leader Exchange Programme for parents and guardians of newly identified youth with disabilities in Kapchorwa. The meeting informed participants about SAU’s work and the projects being implemented in the district. It also turned the meeting into an engaging learning session, where every participant was observed taking notes on practical learnings.

The meeting improved participants’ understanding of disability and provided practical ways to support their children with disabilities in daily activities at home.

The meeting also informed them about the rights of children and persons with disabilities, making them aware that they have a direct responsibility for advocacy at the community level.

SAU successfully monitored the Marinyi Boron and Kaserema I-SAVE groups for youth with disabilities as they shared out their savings after 52 weeks. The groups started saving last year and are now reinvesting for their 3rd cycle.

The monitoring activity went well and we collected some success stories from the youth with disabilities. Many members reinvested their money and expressed gratitude for the savings initiative.

One member shared l thank SAU for introducing the savings initiative. Before joining the group, I had no business. I started one using a loan from the group and today I can buy basic needs for myself, including clean clothes unlike before I joined.

Another member said l loved farming but l had no capital to cultivate a large farm. After joining the group, I accessed a small loan and started growing sukuma. I repaid the loan with fair interest and I used the profit from my first harvest to continue farming tomatoes and I am now expanding into cabbage production due to the changing season. I am happy to say that I am about to harvest cabbages from my large farm.

We also shared experiences on program implementation across health, education, advocacy and other areas that benefit youth with disabilities.

Through the seminar, we strengthened our collaboration and partnerships and set post seminar goals which included holding follow-up meetings, participating in fundraising, engaging in joint advocacy and conducting remote capacity building programs for network partners.

Happening now at Esella Country Hotel, SAU is conducting a three day training on Resource Mobilization for grantees. The training starts today and is for groups of youth with disabilities who are the grantees from Northern and Eastern regions under the Amaani Project, funded by the Fund for Global Human Rights (FGHR).

The purpose of the training is to build these groups’ capacity in fundraising through strategies such as proposal development, partnerships and planning. This training is based on findings from a resource mobilization consultancy conducted by FGHR in partnership with SAU for the same groups.

After this capacity-building activity, the groups are expected to be able to write winning proposals and apply modern fundraising strategies.
