? At 24%, Karamoja’s literacy rate is far below the national average of 75%. It is the lowest in the country. Poverty, drought and& high dropout rates keep many children out of school.
These children deserve the chance to learn, thrive and& shape their own futures.
To change this, VSO, in partnership with UNICEF Uganda and with support from Irish Aid, is implementing the Integrated Programme to Improve Access and Learning Achievement in a Safe Environment (IPALSE) project.
Together we are:
🔹 Upskilling teachers to learner-centred teaching approaches
🔹 Conducting peer-to-peer psychosocial support & mentorship for teachers
🔹 Supporting primary teachers to run catch-up classes in basic reading & maths
🔹 Running community wide go-back-to-school campaigns to increase enrolment in schools
Our goal is to reach 77,161 learners through learning recovery. Including over 5,400 children with disabilities, no learner is left behind.
We are also:
🔹 Supporting secondary school teachers to create safe, inclusive classrooms
🔹 Introducing Education Technology (EdTech) teacher circles for digital learning & management
🔹 Coaching parents and school committees to enrol & keep children in school
Education cannot thrive without protection.
Through IPALSE, we are:
🔹 Linking schools & communities to child protection services
🔹 Raising awareness on GBV, VAC & children’s rights
🔹 Helping learners & parents understand where to report abuse & access support
Our focus is on quality teaching, child protection, and social behaviour change. We are creating a future where every child in Karamoja can learn, thrive & succeed.
