Today is a day of mixed emotions for the Katalemwa Cheshire Home (KCH) family. We have officially bid a fond farewell to our Executive Director, Mr. Herbert Tuhumwire.
Mr. Tuhumwire has been a pillar of strength, leading KCH with compassion and steady dedication to the rehabilitation and empowerment of children with disabilities. His legacy is etched in the smiles of the thousands of children and youth with disabilities and their families whose lives have been transformed under his watch. We thank you, Sir, for your wisdom and your heart!
As one chapter closes, another begins. We are thrilled to announce that our very own Ms. Winnie Matovu, formerly our Human Resource Manager, has stepped into the role of Executive Director. Having been part of our core leadership, she brings a deep understanding of our mission and a passion for the community KCH serves.

Our team is currently at Luwero General Hospital (Kasana), conducting a dedicated outreach clinic for children living with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (SBH).

Working alongside the hospital’s wonderful staff, our multidisciplinary team including a Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Nurse, Social Worker, and Orthopedic Technologist is providing: Comprehensive Assessments to identify specific needs, Physiotherapy & Occupational Therapy, Specialized Nursing Care, Psychosocial Support for caregivers and Assistive Technology Measurements for custom-fit appliances and devices.

At Katalemwa Cheshire Home (KCH), we believe every Child with a Disability (CWD) deserves the opportunity to thrive. We thank the team at Luwero General Hospital for hosting us as we work together to improve lives.

We recently concluded a three-day intensive training at Jinja Kalooli Primary School under our project, “Keeping Girls with Disabilities in School,” with support from Absa Bank Uganda.

True inclusion means learning together. By engaging both girls and boys, with and without disabilities, we are nurturing a supportive school environment where every learner can thrive. Boys play an important role because they share the same learning spaces with girls. Equipping them with accurate knowledge about puberty and Menstrual Health Management (MHM) helps break stigma, reduces teasing and misconceptions, and encourages respect and support for their female peers especially those with disabilities.

Day 1: Pupils participated in a session on demystifying puberty and Menstrual Health Management (MHM), addressing common myths and misconceptions that often prevent girls especially those with disabilities from attending school consistently.

Day 2: Teachers were empowered with practical knowledge and skills to support the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of girls with disabilities, helping ensure that the school environment remains safe, supportive, and inclusive.

Day 3: Parents and pupils took part in a hands-on session sewing reusable sanitary pads by hand, using simple materials such as cotton cloth, needles, and thread, an important step toward sustainable menstrual hygiene solutions.

We are deeply grateful to Absa Bank Uganda for supporting this vital intervention that promotes dignity, inclusion, and equal opportunities for girls with disabilities.

****---Access to clean water and soap is not a luxury; it is vital for effective Menstrual Hygiene Management ( ).---****
Through the Keeping Girls with Disabilities in School project, implemented with the generous support of Absa Bank Uganda, we continue to emphasize that safe and dignified menstrual hygiene begins with something fundamental: reliable access to clean water and soap.
For girls including ones with disabilities, these basic essentials mean:
• Preventing infections and managing menstruation safely
• Maintaining personal hygiene with confidence and comfort
• Properly washing reusable menstrual materials
• Reducing odour and avoiding stigma associated with stains, and so much more
When water and soap are unavailable, the consequences are serious. Poor hygiene increases the risk of infections and skin irritation. Inadequate water and sanitation facilities contribute to school absenteeism. Fear of embarrassment and lack of privacy can cause anxiety and restrict mobility during menstruation.
Ensuring access to these basic resources is not only about hygiene, but also about dignity, inclusion, and keeping girls in school.

Today at Katalemwa Cheshire Home, with support from Absa Bank Uganda, we launched hands-on tailoring training for caretakers and youth with disabilities.
Through the “Keeping Girls with Disabilities in School” project, this initiative equips mothers and youth with disabilities with practical skills to produce reusable sanitary pads. In doing so, we are not only promoting sustainability but also breaking barriers to education for girls with disabilities while fostering inclusive livelihoods.
