🥥 COCONUT: THE NUTRITIONAL TREASURE BEYOND THE FLESH
Most people know coconut for its refreshing water, creamy flesh and distinctive flavour. But nutritionally, coconut is much more interesting than it appears.
One of its unique features is its fatty-acid profile, particularly lauric acid, alongside other medium-chain fatty acids such as caprylic and capric acids. These fats have distinctive digestion and metabolism characteristics compared with many long-chain fats.
But that is only part of the story.
🌿 Polyphenols & phenolic acids — including compounds such as ferulic, caffeic and p-coumaric acids.
🌿 Flavonoids — plant compounds with antioxidant activity.
🌿 Tocopherols (vitamin E compounds) — important lipid-soluble antioxidants.
🌿 Phytosterols — naturally occurring plant sterols found in coconut and its products.
And the coconut flesh itself contributes dietary fibre, fat and minerals, while coconut water provides fluids and electrolytes.
The fascinating part is that processing matters. Virgin coconut oil tends to retain more of coconut's naturally occurring bioactive compounds than highly refined coconut oil.
🥥 Coconut isn't just a food. It's a complex package of fats, fibre, micronutrients and plant bioactives.
But remember: bioactive does not automatically mean medicinal, and coconut oil is still high in saturated fat. Nutrition is always about the whole dietary pattern, quantity and individual needs.
Understand your food. Make informed choices.
