Medical Access 25+ years transforming healthcare supply chains in low-and middle-income countries

07/04/2026

This , we’re reminded that progress in health doesn’t always make headlines, but it changes lives every day. Across the world, science is quietly doing what once felt impossible:

But science alone isn’t enough. It only works when it reaches people.

That’s where we come in.

At Medical Access and UHD, we’re focused on turning scientific progress into real access by bringing quality, trusted medicines and health products closer to the people who need them most. From HIV to non-communicable diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular conditions, access is what makes innovation matter.

Because innovation only changes lives if it gets to the people who need it.

This World Health Day, we , and with the systems, partnerships, and people working every day to make it real across Africa.

For more than 25 years, Medical Access has worked alongside its partners to strengthen public health supply chains across Uganda and sub-Saharan Africa.

Founded in 1998 under the UNAIDS Drug Access Initiative, the organization played a foundational role in enabling early access to antiretroviral therapy in Uganda at a time when treatment costs exceeded US$6,000 per patient per year and availability was extremely limited.

Medical Access started at a critical moment, helping expand access to life-saving HIV treatment when it was out of reach for so many.

Today, the challenge is evolving, and so are we.

As Africa faces shifting disease patterns, Medical Access is entering a new chapter with its NCD+ Access Strategy (2025–2030), bringing the same proven supply chain expertise to non-communicable diseases, chronic conditions, and mental health.

Because access isn’t just about medicines. It’s about building systems that can meet today’s needs and tomorrow’s.

This week, Sowedi Muyingo, Executive Director of Medical Access and UHD, had the privilege of receiving the Vocational Excellence Award by the Rotary International Club of Bukoto in recognition of his pioneering work to expand access to HIV treatment and essential medicines across Africa.

This recognition reflects Sowedi and the team's many years of dedication to strengthening health systems and ensuring life-saving medicines reach the communities that need them most, and our shared commitment to continue the momentum.

As Sowedi shared in his remarks:

“The lessons we learned from the fight against HIV are powerful. The systems we built, from supply chains, treatment programs, to community engagement, can now help us address other challenges like cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Across Africa I see incredible talent and determination. The same commitment that helped us confront HIV will help us tackle the challenges ahead and build a healthier future for our children.”

Thank you to the Rotary Club of Butoko for this meaningful honor.

This , we're joining the fight against cancer.

Over the years, we've built something powerful in the fight against HIV: networks that reach patients, infrastructure that delivers care, and systems that save lives across Africa and beyond.

Now, we're applying everything we've learned to non-communicable diseases, with cancer as a priority.

Cancer and HIV are different diseases. But what it takes to make a real difference for patients? That's exactly the same.

Patients need:

➡️ Treatment they can afford
➡️ Treatment they can actually access
➡️ Providers trained to deliver quality care
➡️ Education so they know when to seek help

We're focusing on all of it, because half measures don't save lives.

The need is urgent. The time to move is now.

We just wrapped up our joint Medical Access and UHD 2026 strategy meeting, and it was a great one.

There are changes ahead. New focus. Bigger expectations…and opportunities. And one shared agreement: stay focused on what matters, and flexible in how we make it happen.

This wasn’t a long slide deck kind of meeting. It was honest conversations about growth, priorities, and how our teams can work better together to deliver real impact for our clients and partners in logistics, supply chain and sales & marketing.

Because strategy only works if it changes how you actually work.

Africa is facing a new health crisis. As infectious diseases decline, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have become the continent’s biggest killer, accounting for nearly 40% of all deaths in Africa. Yet millions struggle to access affordable diagnostics, care, and treatment.

At Medical Access, our story began in the early days of the HIV response. Over 25 years, we’ve helped prove what’s possible when supply chains are strengthened, partners align, and access barriers are removed. Now, we’re turning that experience toward one of the world’s most urgent challenges: non-communicable diseases.

We are now expanding our focus to NCD access because the lessons learned from HIV can and should drive real change for diabetes, cancer, hypertension, and other chronic conditions. And we are uniquely positioned to help make that happen.

We’ve already begun. This summer, Medical Access joined the 2025 Coalition for Access to NCD Medicines and Products Annual Meeting in Kampala. We were proud to share our expertise in supply chain optimization, pooled procurement, quality assurance, and last-mile delivery, and to host a field visit to our warehousing facility to show what resilient, equitable supply chains look like in action.

This is just the start.

We’re ready to partner across sectors to make better NCD care and treatment a reality across Uganda and the region. Let’s make it happen.

We were glad to join partners at , where global health leaders came together at a moment when global health funding and priorities are rapidly shifting. In today’s landscape, sharing what works, and what doesn’t, has never been more important.

Medical Access presented a poster on sustainable procurement models for universal access to HIV care in Uganda, grounded in 25+ years of implementation experience. The strong engagement from summit attendees across the region highlighted how these practical lessons resonate well beyond HIV.

As countries pursue self-reliance and more sustainable supply chains, the insights exchanged at GHSC are essential not only for HIV and other infectious diseases, but also for critical areas like NCDs, where reliable access to medicines is increasingly urgent.

Thank you to the organizers and all partners for fostering the open dialogue our sector needs to navigate this evolving public health environment.

We are honored to celebrate the graduation of the 2024/2025 cohort of the Medical Access Leadership Training Program (LTP). LTP is our graduate development initiative for emerging leaders in supply chain management, logistics, business operations, and health system strengthening .

These future leaders are stepping into vital roles that will shape the efficiency, resilience, and equity of health systems across Uganda, Africa, and beyond. At Medical Access, we’re proud to invest in local talent in order to help build a stronger foundation for healthcare delivery around the world.

Congratulations to this outstanding group — the future of Africa’s health systems is in good hands. 👏

As part of our Restoring Hope Initiative, our staff had the privilege of visiting the NGO Educate An Orphan Uganda last week. Together, we donated essential goods, including toiletries, hygiene products, and school supplies, to support the incredible work they do for children in need.

Each year, our staff identify and select community organizations that could benefit from our support—and this year, we’re honored to contribute to Educate an Orphan’s vital mission and give back to the communities where we operate.

We believe in building brighter futures, one small act of kindness at a time. 💙 ❤️
