🌱 Stronger partners, greater impact for communities

This week, Join For Water Uganda and our implementing partners are back in Fort Portal for Phase 2 of our Organisational Capacity Strengthening programme.

Building on the foundations laid during the first training, this second session is an opportunity to deepen our knowledge, reflect on lessons learned, and strengthen the systems and skills that enable us to deliver sustainable and accountable programmes.

At Join For Water, we believe that lasting impact begins with strong local organisations. By investing in the capacity of our partners; including Joint Effort to Save the Environment - JESE, Natural Resources Defence Initiative (NDRI), Kyaninga Forest Foundation (KFF) we are investing in stronger governance, more effective programme management, and ultimately, better outcomes for the communities we serve.

This week's sessions are not just about learning new tools, they are about learning together, sharing experiences, and finding practical solutions to the challenges we face in our daily work.

When partners grow stronger, our collective ability to protect water resources, strengthen climate resilience, and improve the lives of communities grows stronger too.

🌍 Learning across borders: strengthening climate-Resilient WASH through south-south exchange (Part 1/2)

At Join For Water, we believe that some of the best solutions come from learning with and from one another. That's why we continue to champion South-South learning exchanges; creating opportunities for practitioners, government partners, and communities to share experiences, innovations, and practical solutions for sustainable water resource management.

Last month, our Country Coordinator, Ndungo Isaiah , joined partners from Water For People, the Albert Water Management Zone of the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE), and district local governments from Kabarole, Kamwenge, and Kitagwenda on a learning exchange to Rwanda, focused on integrating climate resilience into WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene).

One of the highlights of the visit was the Green Gicumbi Project in Gicumbi District. Funded by the Rwanda Green Fund, the project demonstrates how integrated watershed management can strengthen climate resilience while improving community WASH services and supporting sustainable livelihoods.

The exchange offered valuable insights into how protecting natural ecosystems, strengthening local governance, and investing in climate-smart approaches can create lasting benefits for both people and the environment.

🌱 Learning by doing: building resilient communities through sustainable water and sanitation

Progress is taking shape at Kamengo Primary School, where the construction of an Ecological Sanitation (EcoSan) toilet is steadily advancing alongside the new Wetland Education Centre being established by Kyaninga Forest Foundation (KFF) with support from Join For Water

During a recent field visit, our team, together with colleagues from our partner Natural Resource Defence Initiative (NRDI), followed up on the construction works, where structural measurements and toilet installations are well underway. Once completed, the EcoSan facility will provide learners with safe, sustainable sanitation while demonstrating innovative approaches to resource-efficient waste management.

But the learning didn't stop at the construction site.

At the Bukwali community tree nursery, our new interns Denis, Aaliyah and Letecia gained hands-on experience in seedling potting, identifying indigenous tree species, and learning ecological restoration techniques for riverbanks. By connecting classroom knowledge with practical field experience, we are helping nurture the next generation of environmental professionals and conservation champions.

Protecting wetlands and freshwater ecosystems starts with informed communities, practical skills, and strong local partnerships. Every seedling planted, every learning opportunity created, and every sustainable infrastructure developed contributes to healthier ecosystems and more resilient communities.

🌻 Where water is protected, communities can thrive.

Across Uganda, farming communities are facing increasing climate uncertainty. Longer dry spells, erratic rainfall and more frequent floods are making it harder to grow food and sustain livelihoods.

Yet, amidst these challenges, there is also hope.

In Ogur Sub-county, Lira District, sunflower fields and thriving vegetable gardens tell a story of resilience. They reflect the determination of farmers who continue to adapt by embracing sustainable agricultural practices and making the most of the natural resources around them.

At Join For Water, we believe that resilient agriculture starts with healthy ecosystems. Protecting wetlands, restoring landscapes and improving water management are essential not only for conserving nature, but also for strengthening food security and supporting rural livelihoods.

Last month, our colleague Komuhangi Conslate was on site, engaging with the community and witnessing firsthand the impact of these efforts. Their visit reaffirmed what we continue to see across our work: when local knowledge, community commitment, and ecosystem restoration come together, real and lasting change is possible.

When communities have access to reliable water resources and are empowered to manage them sustainably, they are better equipped to cope with climate change and build a more secure future.

These fields are more than a harvest; they are a testament to what is possible when people, water and nature thrive together.

Last week our event Wetlands, Culture & Our Future at Alliance Française Kampala demonstrated the power of dialogue across disciplines and generations.

At Join For Water, we believe that protecting wetlands is not only an environmental challenge; it is also a cultural, social, and governance challenge. Sustainable conservation requires more than science and policy alone. It requires listening to communities, valuing indigenous knowledge, and creating spaces where different perspectives can meet and learn from one another.

We were honoured to hear from Ms Lucy Iyango, Assistant Commissioner for Wetlands Management at the Ministry of Water and Environment, whose keynote highlighted the importance of connecting national policy with local realities and community stewardship.

The event also reminded us of the unique role that art and culture can play in environmental action. Through a moving performance by poet Kalinda Luzzi, participants reflected on the often-unnoticed signs of ecosystem decline and our collective responsibility to act before it is too late. 🐟🎤

Most encouraging was the strong participation of young people, whose curiosity, questions, and ideas demonstrated a growing commitment to shaping a more sustainable future.

As Join For Water, we are proud to help convene these conversations in Uganda and bring together voices that do not often share the same platform. Because lasting solutions emerge when diverse stakeholders engage, listen, and act together. 🫱🏾‍🫲🏽🌍

The exhibition remains open for a few more days at the Médiathèque, Alliance Française Kampala.
