🎉 Issue 3 of the Young Africa Works Uganda Digest is here!

This special edition goes beyond individual stories of change to ask a bigger question: what is changing in the systems around young people? Across education, employment, finance, and agrifood systems, we explore how institutions and partnerships are beginning to work differently.

One of our program participants, Beatrice Bukirwa, is among those featured in this edition. Her story captures her journey from perfecting her craft in basketry, to becoming a mentor to other women in her community and eventually being elected as a women’s councilor in her district. Her journey is a powerful example of how access to finance can create opportunities for young women to grow their livelihoods, support others, and take on leadership roles in their communities.

You will also find stories and conversations on making opportunities more inclusive and lasting, financial products designed around the realities of young women, stronger market systems, youth participation, and the institutional changes needed for impact to continue beyond individual programs.

When young people speak, the story should not just be heard. It should help shape what happens next.

For the Empowering Youth Through Data and Community Development ( ) program, supported by the Mastercard Foundation, that means using communications to listen, learn and adapt, so more young people can access safe, dignified and fulfilling work.

Last week, Karungi Kajura and Amanda Thompson Agaba from Children’s Rights and Violence Prevention Fund (Children’s Rights & Violence Prevention Fund ) joined fellow Mastercard Foundation partners at the 2026 Uganda Program Communications Community of Practice Convening.

CRVPF shared our Obuntu Story Circle methodology- a trauma-informed approach that helps young people speak openly about their experiences, aspirations and challenges, while giving programs richer feedback to improve implementation.

That thinking is central to the EYDCD program as we work to expand young people’s access to dignified and fulfilling work and finance.

Across the two days, we also explored media engagement, evidence-based communications, youth voice and agency, reaching minority groups, risk readiness, and trust and creativity in an AI-enabled world.

The message was clear: good communications does more than amplify impact. It helps create it.

Today marks the conclusion of our three day PVAC
Reflection and Learning Meeting in Uganda, bringing together partners and representatives to reflect on our progress, share experiences, and strengthen the implementation of violence prevention programming.

Over the three days, we were able to:
1. Hear real-life testimonies from young boys who have participated in the out-of-school programme, sharing their experiences and the changes they have seen in their lives.
2. Engage with local government representatives and discuss practical ways to strengthen implementation and increase the reach of the programme.
3. Strengthen our systems and knowledge through learning sessions and updates on finance, monitoring and evaluation (M&E), and communications.
4. Reflect on primary prevention with our Executive Director, Fassil W. Marriam, who highlighted families and parenting, schools, communities, and local leaders as key entry points for preventing violence before it happens. He also emphasised the importance of working through clusters, learning from one another, and strengthening community ownership.
The three days created space for honest reflection, shared learning, and planning for the way forward. As we close, we carry with us the experiences and lessons shared, with a continued commitment to preventing violence before it happens and creating safer environments for children and young people.

1 of Uganda PVAC Reflection & Learning Meeting

Today, we kicked off our Prevention of Violence Against Children (PVAC) program Reflection and Learning Meeting with our Uganda partners, creating a space to share experiences, reflect on implementation, and learn from one another.

The first day has focused on the implementation of the parenting program across the areas where our partners work, including the use of parenting groups and Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs). Partners have been sharing what they are seeing on the ground, what is working, the challenges they face, and the approaches they are using to strengthen participation and retention.

These conversations are helping us identify lessons that can strengthen our programming and our collective efforts to prevent violence against children and young people.

What does it take for young refugees to not just survive, but thrive?
At the high-level diaspora conference, Children’s Rights and Violence Prevention Fund (CRVPF) joined ministers, young people, partners and leaders to talk about what it takes to create real pathways to safe, dignified work for refugee youth.

Uganda is home to more than 2 million refugees, and young people make up a significant part of these communities. But as the panels reminded us, talent alone is not enough. Young people need opportunities, platforms, skills, resources and the space to turn their ideas into something real.

As Paphser babu from Refugee Talent Group RTG shared:
“Refugees are not just beneficiaries. We are creative. But talent alone doesn’t create income. Young people need platforms to bring their ideas to life.”
And this starts with listening to young people themselves.

Silas babaluku from Babaluku Foundation emphasised the need to put skills at the centre and create an environment where young people can be part of finding solutions:
“Young people should not be undermined. If we put powerful young people at the forefront, they can bring so many solutions.”

From Adjumani cluster, CRVPF partner Vicky Opia shared how existing community structures are being used to identify young refugees with potential, provide skills and create income opportunities. Through this work, 232 young refugees have been reached with skills and start-up support.
She also spoke honestly about the challenges young refugees continue to face, from limited access to land for agribusiness to increasing mental health pressures linked to food insecurity and difficult living conditions.
Her message was clear: there is a role for everyone, including the diaspora, to bring knowledge, resources and investment back to communities and support young people’s dreams and aspirations.

Safe and dignified work starts with creating spaces where young refugees are seen, heard and supported, and where they can shape the opportunities and solutions that affect their lives.

lulungi couture Takes the Main Stage 🎉

Last Saturday marked a major milestone for Joanna Nabagesera and Lulungi Couture, as her collection was showcased at the grand finale of
at Serena Hotel Gardens, Kampala.

Her work stood alongside collections from designers from Uganda and beyond, earning prominent national media coverage and placing Lulungi Couture firmly within Uganda’s growing fashion conversation.

True to her vision, Joanna also used models with disabilities in the showcase. As she put it, “I wanted to be more inclusive in my collection.” It was a simple but powerful reminder that fashion should reflect and make space for everyone.

Only months earlier, Joanna hosted the Pakasa Art and Fashion Showcase in Kyebando to open doors for emerging designers in her own community. Now, she is stepping onto bigger stages herself.

From learning fashion and tailoring to building a distinctive Afro-contemporary brand, mentoring other creatives and commanding the runway at Uganda International Fashion Week, Joanna’s journey is one to watch.

We are proud to celebrate an Empowering Youth Through Data and Community Development ( )alumna whose talent, ambition and vision continue to speak for themselves.

Congratulations, Joanna. May Lulungi Couture continue to take its place on bigger runways, in bigger rooms, and in the future of African fashion.💕

Last week, members of the Children’s Rights and Violence Prevention Fund (Children’s Rights & Violence Prevention Fund ) Regional Board and US Board, together with our Program Coordinators, came together in Mombasa, Kenya, for an important moment of reflection, learning and looking ahead. 🌍

Against a changing and increasingly uncertain funding landscape, the meeting created space to reflect on how CRVPF can continue to strengthen and amplify its work while staying grounded in the leadership of the communities and partners at the heart of what we do.

A highlight of the visit was spending time with community partners and program participants from the Binti Pwani AGPP cluster implementing the (AGPP), as well as the Kilifi VAC Cluster implementing the (PVAC) program.

These conversations brought the Board and Program Coordinators closer to the realities, experiences and ideas of the people shaping change within their own communities, an important reminder that our mission to prevent violence and sexual violence against children and young people begins with listening, partnership and learning.

The meeting also marked an important leadership transition as we celebrated and honoured Professor Anne Ruhweza Katahoire, who completed her tenure as Chair of CRVPF’s Regional Board after ten years of service.

Over the past decade, Professor Anne has helped guide CRVPF through an extraordinary period of growth and evolution. We are deeply grateful for her leadership, wisdom and commitment to CRVPF’s vision and to creating safer, stronger communities for children and young people.

As one chapter closes and another begins, we carry forward the lessons, relationships and leadership that have brought us this far, and remain committed to walking alongside our partners and communities as we shape what comes next. 💛

For a young person, building a reliable and consistent income typically takes more than mastering a technical skill; it demands a robust support system offering continuous guidance to help them succeed.

Rosemary, a young barber in Mukono District, attributes her breakthrough to the dedicated mentorship she received from WARM HEARTS FOUNDATION UGANDA , a community-based organization supported by Children’s Rights and Violence Prevention Fund (Children’s Rights & Violence Prevention Fund ) through the (EYDCD ) program.

Her journey demonstrates that when organizations successfully connect foundational training with practical market opportunities, young women are able to achieve meaningful financial autonomy.
