In recent years, Uganda has witnessed a surge in online activism, particularly on social media platforms like Twitter, where citizens have increasingly voiced their concerns about corruption, public service failures, and other governance issues. While these online protests have garnered significant attention and sometimes even international consequences, their actual impact on driving systemic change remains debatable.
This wave of digital activism recently translated into calls for public demonstrations, with varying degrees of success. One recent example is the widely publicized march to Parliament, which was intended to demand accountability and resignations from key government officials. Despite the momentum built online, the actual turnout for the march was low, leading to questions about the effectiveness of online activism in translating to real-world impact. Uganda govt officials and politicians have labeled online movements as foreign-sponsored attempts to destabilize the country, raising concerns about the potential political exploitation of such protests.
