The Social Protection Community of Practice- Uganda Chapter

On the Wednesday 6th September 2023 at the Hotel Africana in Kampala, the Social Protection Community of Practice was officially launched.

A network of social protection policymakers, researchers, implementers and advocates to share lessons, problem solve and indeed share opportunities.

A space for mentorship, learning and galvanizing towards pushing the social protection agenda and indeed the national vision.

Privileged to have had the eminent Economist, Statesman and Scholar, Professor Ezra Suruma setting the pace.

Special appreciation to a mentor, a social protection advocate ,the Global Policy & Advocacy Lead, Child Poverty, Save the Children International for guiding the discussion with

Financing for Health in Uganda
3.9% Health Insurance coverage
41% Out of pocket expenditure
15% Households impoverished due to health expenditure

Over 20yrs, the NHIS Bill is still a back and forth affair.
With majority of Ugandans earning on average a paltry sh200,000 (USD 54) at the end of the month, there is never any left to cover medical expenses.

Glad to have moderated a panel discussion on the same at this year's National Community Health Financing Conference organised by Save For Health Uganda

Thank you team for keeping the fire on this very important conversation.

Process systematisation

A very interesting and deep aproach to project evaluation.

It is deep, tasking and has potential to extract what would ideally remain unearthed lessons from implementing a project to provide new knowledge.

Happy to be facilitating a process systematisation on creating national advocacy networks on social protection and public finance management.

Karamoja and West Nile

Two regions with compounding vulnerabilities.

Karamoja continues to suffer the twin crisis of hunger and malnutrition following crop failure due to the long dry spell and ofcourse the insecurity in the region. Selfish individuals continue prey on the children of the region and turning them into beggers on the streets in different urban areas and especially the capital Kampala.
West Nile, a refugee hosting region grapples with a myriad of challenges, pre-existing and emerging.

We had a conversation with the legislators from the two regions on building resilient communities through social protection.

They know the challenges, they know the solutions.

What is the missing link?
