Our Director had the honor of being interviewed by Dr. Motoko Mekata, Professor at Chuo University, Japan, and a leading global expert on landmines and peacebuilding. The interview was facilitated by Dr. Yeshua Moser-Puangsuwan, President of Nonviolent International Canada and a member of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize-winning International Campaign to Ban Landmines #(ICBL).

Here is what he said about AI and democracy,

Democracy, as Yuval Noah Harari puts it, is simply a conversation. People talk about what they like and dislike. If they change their minds later, they talk again, and the system corrects itself. The absence of that conversation is what we call dictatorship.

This is why democracy worked in small communities like ancient Athens. Everyone could gather in one square and talk. But once kingdoms grew larger, that conversation became impossible. You can't fit a million people in one square. So for most of history, the king simply decided, because there was no way to ask everyone what they thought.

Then came the printing press, newspapers, and the telegraph. Suddenly, conversation could scale beyond the village. People could read the same news and form opinions together.

Today, we have social media. The most powerful conversation tool ever built. By this logic, we should be living in the most democratic era in human history.

But the opposite is happening.

Why? No shortage of information. The problem is that it's not true information.

We are feeding humanity a diet of bad information, and a society that can't agree on basic facts cannot have a real conversation.

So what do you do when you're young and you don't have a seat at the table?

Our Managing Director had the opportunity to meet the people who make the New Horizons for Orphans project possible at City Wall in Canada, the individual donors and the RC of Sydney sunrise who stand behind it. This is the initiative through which African Initiatives for Change (AIC) keeps refugee orphans in school at the Hope of the Nation Primary & Nursery School in Nakivale.

Much of the conversation was about the long game. It is one thing to fund a child’s education for a year; it is another to make sure that education does not stop the moment the funding does. So we focused on the project’s sustainability plan, building a school that can eventually stand on its own and keep these children learning well after the current grants end. Another point that was also discussed is funding a feeding program at the school, so that a child’s ability to learn is not undermined by an empty stomach.

Alongside this, together with a few Rotarians and individual donors, we have begun drafting a proposal for a self-sustained pharmacy within the Nakivale Refugee Settlement, a facility designed to fund its own operation while bringing healthcare within reach of thousands of refugees who currently go without it.

Our sincere thanks to the RC of Sydney sunrise, individual donors, and everyone who contributed to make this a reality, this is the kind of work we want to keep doing.

We are pleased to welcome Mr Samuel Ombeni from AYISD a mentor in agriculture who spent his day at our school purposely to train kids on basic agricultural practices. The session covered correct watering technics, growing crops 🌱, and garden care using available resources.

The activity aimed to build early agricultural skills, responsibility, and interest in food production🌱 among children.

These kids showed up, listened, and got their hands dirty. The lesson was: agriculture isn’t just work — it’s life skills.

We’re teaching them that food doesn’t come from shops. It comes from soil, water, and care.
Every child with a watering can is a future farmer, scientist, or innovator.
