On September 7, we had the pleasure of convening approximately 90 students both in person and virtually as we launched the mentorship program for students with disabilities in Ugandan institutions of higher learning. This project represents the culmination of my professional experience in the U.S., and I am deeply grateful to my mentor, Jacy Farkas , Kyambogo University United Persons with Disabilities - UPDS , and the Disabled People’s Organization for their invaluable support in making this project a success.

Having faced numerous challenges in my own academic journey, including inaccessible classrooms and rejections due to accommodation needs, I am committed to using my experiences to help more students with disabilities achieve their educational goals. My project aims to enhance disability support in higher education by recruiting students and mentors, providing customized training, and improving policies. The ultimate goal is to empower students with disabilities to achieve success in both their education and careers.

Climate change is having the largest impact on the world's poorest and most vulnerable people. Within this group, 20% are people with disabilities who are nearly always at Double disadvantage. It's about food, water, shelter, livelihood and security for people with disabilities and their families in the changing environments. In fact, person to disabilities face mortality rates up to four times higher than their none disabled colleagues in times of natural disasters. Despite our significant population, climate change adaptation efforts often neglect their needs, which amplifies marginalization. Health risks, limited Mobility, evacuation challenges and disrupted access to services and livelihoods being some of the challenges they face.

Imagine people with disabilities in wheelchairs, the blind, the deaf, persons with albinism among others during seasons of flooding, landslides, severe heatwaves and drought.

As a result, we believe that it is extremely important to prioritize persons with disabilities in climate action to ensure that their strengths and vulnerabilities are represented in all forums, strategies, response mechanisms and discussions thereby promoting a more inclusive and Equitable response to climate change.

Coalition for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Activism _crpda has brought together 10 organizations of persons with disabilities in our pilot project to enhance conversations on disability inclusive climate action programing.

A Call for Mentors and Mentees!
Having been sponsored by the US Department of State for the Spring 2024 on Inclusive Civic Engagement, we're launching the pilot for Students with disabilities entitled "Empowering disability self-advocacy in higher education; a mentorship and training program for Ugandan universities.'' to be conducted at Kyambogo University.

The primary objective of this project is to establish and Implement a disability mentorship program within the university setting with a specific Focus on promoting inclusive Civic engagement. Recognizing the inherent connection between higher education, inclusivity and active civic participation, our initiative aims to empower students with disability to not only Excel academically but also actively engage in Civic life.

Through mentorship, our project seeks to foster an environment that goes beyond academic support, aiming to instill a sense of social responsibility, Community involvement, and advocacy among students with disabilities. By addressing the unique challenges faced by this student demographic, we envision creating a platform that nurtures inclusive Civic engagement, ensuring that the voices and perspectives of students with disabilities are heard and valued within the broader university community. In essence, this shall also involve supporting the University Administration to enact, review and or adapt better disability sensitive policies.

Mentors shall be graduates from different professional spheres who may or may not be individuals with disability and willing to share their knowledge, experience and expertise. Mentees shall be students with disabilities from Kyambogo University.
