Happy International Workers' Day!
Today we honour every refugee who wakes up and works , formally or informally, recognised or invisible, paid fairly or not at all.

Refugees do not just want jobs. They want the dignity that comes with earning their own way.
Today belongs to them too.

This is what refugee-led community outreach looks like in urban Kampala. No big offices. No expensive consultants. Just people who care about the community showing up where the community actually is. At Aider Refugee Initiative we have been doing this work every single day. And we will keep doing it. But we want to be honest about one thing.

RLOs are on the ground. We have the trust. We have the access. We have the relationships that took years to build. What we do not have is the funding to match the need. As aid cuts continue to impact refugee communities across Uganda the most cost effective and impactful investment any donor can make right now is direct funding to refugee-led organisations.
We do not need to be managed. We do not need to be supervised. We need to be resourced.

To our partners NRC and OPM thank you for this collaboration. To donors and international partners watching this space the door is open. Come work with us directly.

Referrals save lives. Proper reporting protects children. Our team now knows how to do both. Two days of training with AWYAD and they came back stronger. This is what community protection looks like.

When a child is in danger or a woman is being abused the community needs someone who knows how to respond. That is exactly what our team learned this week, this two days training was led by AWYAD.

Millions of dollars are spent. But where does the impact go?

The answer is simple. Nobody asked the refugees.

When you give refugees a seat at the table , not just a chair, but a real voice , everything changes. They know their needs. They know their communities. They know where the gaps are.

Listen to them. Hear what is in their hearts. Adapt the response accordingly.

That is how you save millions. That is how you create real impact.

At Aider Refugee Initiative, we believe the solution has always been in the room. It just needs to be heard. 🙏🏽

Imagine a world where one brave voice can spark hope for thousands.

This is Hikma’s story.

Hikma, a resilient young refugee from Ethiopia, has always dreamed of making her voice heard as a communications professional and spokesperson.

Despite the challenges of displacement, her determination never faded. When she discovered the Power project by Aider in 2025, she seized the opportunity to turn her dreams into reality.

Through the program, Hikma flourished—learning leadership, mastering photography, and developing the confidence to inspire others. Today, she leads her fellow students, passionately advocates for change, and commands attention with her powerful public speaking.

But Hikma isn’t stopping there. Her next mission is to join the humanitarian field, championing the rights of refugee women and girls in Uganda—proving that one empowered young woman can light the way for many.

Hikma shares, “I am incredibly grateful to the Power project, Aider Refugee Initiative and NRC - Norwegian Refugee Council for opening these doors for me.”

Watch for her upcoming video and discover how Hikma’s journey is just beginning.
