As the World is facing an unprecedented pandemic, Covid-19 Help Foundation (CHF) is leading the effort
to increase community awareness on the prevention and spread of the COVID-19 diseases, reduce panicking and disinformation caused by the spread of the COVID-19 disease, and ensuring the supply of basic necessities such as food, water, face masks and shelter to the poorest, needy and underprivileged families who have been affected by Covid-19 pandemic in East Africa (Uganda �, Kenya �, Tanzania �, Rwanda �, Burundi �, South Sudan �) Somalia � and Ethiopia �, Sudan �, Djibouti �, Comoros � and Seychelles
As of December 6, 2020, the East Africa region had registered over 300,000 reported cases with 5,098 deaths due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) with Ethiopia being the most affected country accounting for 1,747 casualties. They are highly vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic due to poor living conditions and lack of basic facilities. Most of them are dependent on informal sources of livelihood which are most affected by the pandemic. While various control measures have helped to stop the rapid spread of the virus, it has affected the livelihoods and food security of the populations, particularly those living in informal settlements and those dependent on informal sources of livelihoods. It is estimated that more than 41.5 million people are currently food insecure in East Africa, with an increase from 24 million prior to the pandemic. And more than 14 million are facing acute food insecurity in the urban areas of East Africa. Similarly, with the loss of income, loss of life most especially the breadwinners and the rise in food prices, poor households are increasingly unable to afford a nutritious diet, and this could likely result in a considerable deterioration of the nutrition situation of the populations. Thus, serious and concerted efforts are required to protect health and well-being of the poor populations in the current context, where living with the pandemic has become a new normal and will continue for some time. This would require providing livelihoods, food security and, access to water for populations, particularly those who are most vulnerable. As the world further continues to fight the rapid spread of the virus, Covid-19 Help Foundation has come out to tackle the problems arising out of this contagion by ensuring continuous livelihood access to the poor communities, provision of necessary resources such as food, water and shelter (especially for the homeless and migrants), spreading mass awareness on prevention and reducing panicking at the community-level most especially in the hot spots.
