Emma Sebaduka’s Journey: From Abandonment to Aspiration
I first met Emma when he was about nine years old. At the time, I didn’t know much about his background, but I later learned that his mother had abandoned him. When I asked him about his ambitions, Emma told me that his dream was to attend St. Peter’s Secondary School in Nsambya, Uganda. Quietly, I resolved in my heart that one day I would help make that dream a reality, though I didn’t tell him then.
I decided to begin by enrolling him in a local primary school near where I worked, and I personally took responsibility for paying his school fees. Emma studied diligently and completed his primary education there. His hard work paid off—he passed Primary 7 with a first grade, which earned him admission into none other than his dream school: St. Peter’s Secondary School, Nsambya.
Emma continued his studies at St. Peter’s, though life was not without challenges. At one point, one of his benefactors who had been housing him had to relocate to the village, leaving Emma without a place to stay. That’s when another extraordinary person stepped in—Mr. Sam Matovu, then headteacher of Jossam Primary School in Nsambya. Mr. Matovu took Emma in, cared for him, and often supported him with fees, food, clothing, and exam costs when I was unable to. Truly, he was a God-sent partner in Emma’s journey.
While I began supporting Emma as an individual, later my family and I co-founded Light Empowerment Foundation, a charity dedicated to helping the vulnerable in Uganda. It is children like Emma that we had in mind when we started. The journey has been tough and often challenging, especially in raising resources to support students like him. Yet, moments like seeing Emma’s smile when he receives his textbooks remind us why we continue pressing forward.
Today, Emma is in Senior 5, working hard towards his dream of becoming a surgeon. Recently, our Volunteer Executive Director of Light Empowerment Foundation, Lucy, visited Emma to help him purchase textbooks he needed to excel in his studies.
Emma’s story is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do at Light Empowerment Foundation. It takes a community to lift a child and with love, support and faith, dreams that once seemed impossible can indeed become true
