🀝🌱 Expanding Our Impact Through Community Training

The best solutions are the ones that communities can take ownership of themselves. πŸ’š

That is why SLAC continues to conduct regular community trainings and support the formation of new community groups across the region. πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎπŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ

Over the past months, farmers and community members have participated in trainings on topics such as:

🌿 Sustainable agriculture

🐝 Beekeeping

🧼 Soap making

♻️ Waste utilization and circular economy

πŸ’Ό Entrepreneurship and value addition

🌳 Agroforestry and environmental conservation

At the same time, new community groups are being formed to strengthen peer-to-peer learning, encourage cooperation, and ensure that knowledge continues to spread far beyond our demonstration site. 🀝✨

Research consistently shows that farmers are far more likely to adopt new practices when they learn from trusted peers within their own communities. πŸ“ˆπŸŒ

Together, we are building a growing network of farmers, entrepreneurs, and changemakers committed to creating sustainable livelihoods and a healthier environment for future generations. πŸŒ±πŸ’š

🌽πŸ₯¬πŸŒ³ What Sustainable Agriculture Can Look Like

Instead of planting a single crop, we combine maize, beans, cabbage, fruit trees, and tree seedlings on the same piece of land. 🌱🌳

This approach, known as intercropping and agroforestry, offers many benefits:

πŸ“ˆ Higher overall productivity

🐞 Better pest resistance

πŸ’§ Improved water retention

🌱 Healthier soils

🌍 Greater resilience to climate change

Nature thrives through diversity, and farms can too. πŸ’š

By demonstrating these systems, we help farmers discover practical ways to increase yields while protecting the environment for future generations.

Understanding Communities Before Designing Solutions: research-driven development work

At SLAC, we believe that effective development should be guided by evidence, not assumptions. πŸ’š

That is why we recently completed a large-scale quantitative baseline survey covering more than 250 households from eleven villages and counting! πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎπŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ

Our survey explored:

πŸ“š Existing knowledge and skills

🌱 Agricultural challenges and opportunities

πŸŽ“ Training topics people would like to learn

🀝 Preferred learning methods

πŸ’Ό Livelihood and income-generating activities

The results will help us design programs that truly reflect the priorities and needs of the people we serve.

By combining scientific data collection with strong community participation, we can ensure that our resources are invested where they create the greatest impact. 🌍✨

πŸ‘‹πŸŒ Meet Our Volunteer Andrea!

For two weeks, Andrea has been a wonderful part of the SLAC family. From helping with daily activities on our demonstration farm 🚜🌱 to joining community visits and engaging with local farmers, she brought enthusiasm, dedication, and a genuine passion for sustainable development. πŸ’š

Volunteer exchanges like these create valuable opportunities for learning on both sides. They allow us to share knowledge, build friendships across cultures, and strengthen our collective commitment to a more sustainable future. 🌍✨

Thank you, Andrea, for your hard work, kindness, and willingness to learn. We are grateful for your contribution and wish you all the best in your future endeavors. πŸ’š

Safe travels and hopefully see you again one day! 😊

A Milestone for SLAC: Opening Our Second Demonstration Site!

What started as a vision has now grown into a thriving center for sustainable development. We are proud to announce the successful opening of our second demonstration site, bringing together all of our major projects in one place and making them more accessible than ever to the community.

More than 400 participants joined us to celebrate this achievement, including representatives from the Ugandan National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), local leaders, farmers, community groups, and development partners.

Visitors explored a wide range of demonstration projects, including:
🍯 Organic honey production
🧼 Soap making
🌿 Essential oil processing
πŸ›οΈ Paper bag production
πŸ₯¬ Fresh vegetables from our demonstration farm

Community groups also showcased their own handmade products, including bags, crafts, and other entrepreneurial innovations inspired by our trainings.

In this learning hub, farmers, women, youth, and entrepreneurs can discover practical solutions to increase income, strengthen food security, and protect the environment.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in making this day unforgettable. Together, we are building a greener and more prosperous future for rural communities.

Annual Report 2025

πŸ“˜Our Annual Report 2025 is finally here!

It tells the story of a year that challenged us, taught us a lot, and reminded us why we do this work. We faced obstacles, celebrated small and big successes, and kept going together with our communities. Thank you for being part of this journey.

Meet Our Volunteers Raf & Rose
Meet Raf and Rose from the UK πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§, who spent several weeks volunteering in our Buseesa Demonstration Forest! Through the WWOOF platform, they came to experience authentic Ugandan village life while learning about agroforestry and essential oil distillation. 🌿
We’re truly grateful for their dedication and the positive impact they made on our project and community. πŸ’š

Petroleum Jelly Making Workshop
Empowering women through skills and self-reliance!
Our team recently conducted a petroleum jelly–making workshop, attended by over 30 local women. Participants learned how to produce high-quality jelly using locally available materials β€” a simple yet powerful opportunity for self-sustainability and entrepreneurship.
We’re proud to support women in turning knowledge into income and independence!
