My presentation focused on integrating MMOC (Midwifery Models of Care) into Uganda’s maternal health framework not as a theoretical ideal, but as a practical, systems-level approach to improving maternal and newborn outcomes in low-resource settings.

This work matters because Uganda’s maternal health challenges are not due to lack of effort, but to fragmented models that underutilize midwives’ full scope of practice. Strengthening MMOC integration is about:
• continuity of care
• leadership by midwives
• context-appropriate, evidence-based systems
• and accountability at policy and service-delivery levels

I appreciate the ICM leadership for creating spaces where contextual realities from the Global South are not only heard, but valued. Recognition is meaningful when it affirms work that is grounded, uncomfortable, and necessary.

Grateful for the opportunity to contribute and committed to pushing this conversation from dialogue into action.

Ward stories : Laughter in the Midst of Healing

This evening , while we were busy with our drug administration round, a small circle of mothers and their attendants had formed in one corner of the ward. They were deep in conversation, the kind of talk that starts small but soon pulls in everyone within earshot.

One mother was confessing, between laughs, how she “gassed the whole night” and before she could even finish, another quickly added, “Eh, we all heard you!” The whole group erupted in laughter, and for a moment, the entire ward joined the 🤭.

It’s these small, unplanned moments that make the ward feel less heavy. Behind those smiles are women who have been here for days, some recovering from C-sections, others waiting for their tiny ones to be strong enough to leave the neonatal unit. Their laughter is more than just a reaction to a funny story it’s a release, a way to share the weight of long hospital days and the anxieties they often hide behind brave faces.

As midwives, we know medicine heals the body, but community heals the spirit. And in that corner of the ward today, healing was happening in both ways.
