History of the organization

Ground zero project (GZP) was first/initially formed as a youth and women’s group in August, 2008, by a few women and youth of Kabale District who saw the need to pool their saving together to alleviate poverty, eliminate violence against rural women, harmful practices among the women and youth to involve a system to provision of a revolving fund and training in busine

ss management. Our philosophy

Our mission, vision and philosophy is to build a vibrant efficient and sustainable revolving fund program which will promote economic and social development of the economically active poor women, especially women with HIV/AIDS and the youth, by building their capacity training, non formal education and improving their opportunities and skills to access revolving fund and eradicate the root causes of poverty among them, and enable them attain self- reliance and sustainability; by setting up viable/profitable micro businesses to generate income for their families. Our vision is of a Uganda in which women and youth aspiration’s, rights and productive potentials are fully recognized and mainstreamed in the framework of equitable and sustainable human development. Training youth and women in management skills to needy members to start micro-businesses or expand existing micro-projects. At that time, (and even now it was very difficult for the economically active poor women more especially women with HIV/AIDS and youth to access credit or loans from banks and other commercial institutions as they lacked collateral a limiting factor to the majority of poor women who form the bulk of the population. Leadership structure

GZP is an organization composed of youth and women members from Kabale Districts. It has a General Assembly composed of all its members, which sits once every year and it is the supreme organ of the organization. The General Assembly elects the Board of Directors (B.O.D) which is responsible for all affairs as regards supervision, policies and administration of the organization. The board is composed of 7 members 4 of them are below 36 years of age and another set of 3 are below the age of 24years. The board is lead by a younger lady and he is also the head of the organization. He is the head of the management Team. He is also the board secretary General. In addition there are other officers of the Executive/Management team responsible for the day to day running of the organization. Head Office

The organization’s head office acts as the administrative arm of the organization and is mandated to manage and implement the day-to-day activities of GZP. It coordinates the activities of the organization, disseminates information to members to keep them updated of any development in the organization. The Head Office is based in Kabale town, South Western Uganda. Membership

GZP’s membership is made of youth and women’s small groups focusing on improving the status of the youth, women and promoting equality and equity. GZP’s membership are groups formed and led by women and youth at all levels. Current projects

Women and youth are divided into two groups and each two activity training process in a 6-day workshop. They are taught to maximize the use of materials that can be readily obtained on the local market. During the training both theory and practical, women and youth are also shown how to make various designs of candles, soaps etc from the simple ones used for home basics (at house hold level), to the more elaborate ones that also serve a decorative purpose in churches and for special occasions. In this regard, girls need to be connected to opportunities and channels as well as be empowered with life skills for self esteem so as to take control of their future lives and be provided with the environment that will enable them to discover and enhance there potentials for a better future. Channels for exploiting their futures include access to educate and training, providing space and enabling environmental, especially decent work to earn living, eliminating discrimination of all forms against girls, including zero tolerance for sexual harassment and abuse in their homes, communities, schools and at all work places

Organizational Programs

Currently, Ground Zero Project (GZP) supports four main programs in Kabale Uganda: the Educational Support Program, the Family Empowerment Program, the HIV/AIDS Program and the Information, Education, Communication and Advocacy Program. Family Empowerment Program

This program helps families affected by HIV/AIDS and those not affected to improve their socioeconomic status and access HIV/AIDS services. Through counseling, social support and education, GZP equips families and the youth with the socioeconomic skills necessary for economic development, including business planning, micro-financial and management skills, and helps HIV-affected families access HIV/AIDS services, including testing and treatment for opportunistic infections. HIV/AIDS Program

This program provides families affected by HIV/AIDS with access to information and treatment support. Specifically, GZP enables HIV+ Youth and women to access highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART), food supplements, routine medical treatment, and counselling in an effort to help these children and youth cope with their disease and lead happy, productive lives. In addition, this program also provides support to HIV+ women through counselling, guidance and treatment services, as well as sexual

Educational Support Program

Ground Zero Project Uganda (GZP Uganda). Provides older children enrolled in our program with access to secondary education and vocational training. In addition to providing primary and secondary education, GZP Uganda also supports orphans who are staying with their ground mothers through free excess to life skill training

Information, Education, Communication and Advocacy Program

Under this program, GZP Uganda has set up both women and youth Drama group with a music and cultural dance troupe comprised of women and youth enrolled in our programs in Kabale. Through theater, music, dance and drama, these young people aim to raise global awareness of the effects of HIV/AIDS on children and youth in rural and urban areas in Kabale District. And advocate for international assistance to end the devastating effects of AIDS on the youth. Non Formal Skills Training Program

Ground Zero Project is taking read to foster community development through trainings in small scale industries. In this regard, women and youth need to be connected to opportunities and channels as well as be empowered with life skills for self-esteem so as to take control of their future lives and be provided with the environment that will enable them to discover and enhance their potentials for a better future.
