The Global Fellows along with Madam Hope and Mr. Andrew, visited Comfort (far right, in pink) and her family to give their condolences after the recent loss of her father. The GFs carried some gifts, gave their handwritten notes and share words of encouragement.

As we celebrate World Book Day, we remember that being able to read is a privilege. Books open doors to different worlds of ideas, introduce new cultures and ways of thinking.
This year, the idea is to "Go all in" so whatever you are interested in, be fully immersed in it, read about it and share the knowledge you gain.

Day 2 also took our Global Fellows to Makerere University β€” East Africa's oldest and most storied institution β€” hosted by the Julius Nyerere Leadership Centre who organized the tour. πŸŽ“
For most of our fellows, it was their first time stepping onto the university campus. But not for everyone. Alex, MCF's first ever Global Fellow, is now a Makerere student β€” completing his Master's in Business Administration (MBA) under continued MCF sponsorship. He was once a porridge kid in rural Kabale. Today he walked these grounds as a graduate student and guide to the younger Global Fellows.

And Claire, in these photos, sat in the same primary school classroom as Alex just four years ago.
That's what Expanding Horizons is for. Not just to show them a university β€” but to show them someone just like them who is already there. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬

US Embassy
Day 2 of the Expanding Horizons trip took our SMM Global Fellows to the American Center Kampala, where staff guided them through an exhibit on America's Founding Fathers for the America's 250th year. For young people from rural Kabale, standing inside a U.S. Embassy space and engaging with ideas that shaped a nation β€” that's the whole point of this fellowship. Many thanks to the U.S. officers who arranged the visit and to and to their staff for the warm welcome. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

✨ MOVING THE MILESTONE A BIT MORE! ✨

Day by day, school by school, we're witnessing something remarkable. Today (sitting for Science and English papers) we celebrate the 29 incredible P7 students at Bugongi Primary School who have made it through a full course of primary education!

BOYS (14): Shane A., Godfrey A., Blessing A., Jordan A., Joshua A., Collins A., Innocent Isaac K., Eric N., David N., Daniel O., Ricky Daniel T., Joshua T., Trevor T., and Elijah A.

GIRLS (15): Miracle A., Linet A., Emmanuel A., Anita A., Fortunate A., Blessed K., Apophia K., Mariam K., Shanaz K., Evelyne K., Linean N., Comfort N., Merab N., Mary Anna O., and Nancy T.

Over 37,500 meals were served to this group alone over seven years. That's 37,500 reasons to show up. 37,500 chances to learn. 37,500 days of choosing to stay when most of their peers dropped out. And during exams, we provide a special meal.

In rural Kabale, where 70% of students still leave school by their 5th year and secondary education remains financially out of reach for most families, these 29 students made a different choice. The result of programs like ours create an opportunity. These kids took what we offered all the way to the national exam.

Last week's good luck card (pictured here) was just the beginning. Today, is about their grit, their determination, and their achievement.

To our Bugongi P7 students: You've already won. You persevered when others couldn't. You made it when the odds were against you. Whatever tomorrow brings, today you are champions!

So proud of you and good luck! πŸ“šβœ¨
