How can we enhance the well being and social security of all people and boost economic development while sustaining the country’s biodiversity and ecosystems? The mission of CCD is premised on these questions. Human well being starts with sufficient income or resources to obtain adequate food and shelter. In the developing world, the majority of the families live in rural areas and depend on natur
al resources for their daily existence. So, where opportunities are limited, people and their livelihoods are increasingly vulnerable in the face of climate change, population growth and declining natural resources. The natural resources bank is continuously being degraded or used unsustainably in the guise of economic development, yet all people benefit equally and the cost of the benefits are borne disproportionately by the poor. As a result, we are already witnessing food and water shortages, increased vulnerability to hazards like drought, floods and dwindling fuel supplies. CCD recognises the abundance of successful experiences of localized innovation to address these issues and rallies communities towards capacity building, social capital formation and participatory planning in order to achieve community generated /driven interventions. This involves activities and projects which support communities in managing their resources in sustainable and equitable ways. Our area of focus is therefore agriculture and environment conservation. At the heart of food production and environment conservation challenges are small scale farmers, most of whom are women and these are the key target population. CCD seeks to assist in improved food production through training in crop and animal husbandry and market research. Also communities are assisted in extension of appropriate technologies through a farm school in order to achieve sustained productivity in conformity with environment conservation
