Daily Monitor

Alarm over safety of persons with albinism in Mayuge.

A man has been arrested in Mayuge District for allegedly attempting to obtain hair and nails from a teenage boy with albinism—suspected to be linked to harmful ritual practices.

The incident has sparked fear among families and highlights the persistent myths and misconceptions that continue to put persons with albinism at risk.

No child should live in fear because of their identity. We must challenge harmful beliefs, strengthen community vigilance, and protect the rights and safety of persons with albinism.

📢 Speak out. Report suspicious actions. Protect every life.

SNUPA successfully held dissemination meetings in Nakivale and Rwamwanja refugee settlements to share the achievements and lessons from our two-year education project for learners with albinism. Supported by Advantage Africa and funded by the Educational Opportunity Foundation (EOF), the project has improved access to education, strengthened teacher capacity, and increased awareness on the rights and needs of persons with albinism.

District leaders, teachers, parents, and learners reaffirmed their commitment to continue supporting learners with albinism through inclusive education, improved healthcare access, and stronger community sensitization. Stakeholders also called for scaling up the project to reach more learners in both refugee settlements and host communities.

We thank EOF, Advantage Africa, district leaders, schools, and communities for their support in ensuring that learners with albinism are not left behind. Together, we can continue building inclusive and equitable opportunities for all.
