Khadijah’s story is not unique. Hundreds of girls face the same struggle every month reaching their period without enough menstrual pads, worrying about how they will manage, whether they can stay in class, or whether they will simply have to stay home.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

A full reusable menstrual hygiene kit can support a girl for more than two years, giving her greater confidence, dignity and peace of mind throughout her menstrual cycle.

𝗔 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗼𝗴𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗼𝗻𝗲-𝗶𝗻-𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹.

That number has barely moved in a decade — despite countless awareness campaigns, health education sessions, and well-meaning interventions. And we need to be honest about why.

Every year, thousands of girls in Busoga, Eastern Uganda, have their futures rewritten by a pregnancy they did not choose and a system that was never designed to protect them.

We talk about teenage pregnancy as if it is a health problem. It is not. It is a symptom — of patriarchal norms that position girls as assets to be married off, of economic poverty that makes a daughter's bride price a rational household decision, of schools that quietly expel pregnant girls without ever questioning the men responsible, and of communities that have learned to stay silent about all of it.

At EHFCH, we have engaged with adolescent girls in Busoga and what we have learned is this: these girls do not lack information. They lack power. They lack the organised, collective dialogue and a voice to demand different treatment from the families, institutions, and communities that shape their lives.

Because a girl who stays in school does not just change her own life. She changes what the next generation of girls in her community believes is possible.

A girl who stays in school is statistically less likely to experience 𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘨𝘦, 𝘵𝘦𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘺, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. Her children are more likely to be educated. Her community is more likely to thrive.

Girls' education is not a gender issue. It is a development issue. It is a public health issue. It is an economic issue.

Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world ,positioning a tremendous opportunity for national growth and transformation.
