đź“Ť Community voices matter!

During our Neighbourhood Environment Watch (NEW) community dialogue at Pamba Market in Soroti City, residents shared the everyday environmental challenges they face; delayed waste collection, poor drainage, inadequate sanitation facilities, lack of running water in public toilets, and limited awareness on proper waste management.

Residents reminded us that paying taxes should go hand in hand with receiving quality public services and that together, we can build cleaner, healthier, and more resilient communities.

🤝 We call on city authorities, community members, and partners to act on these concerns and work together to improve sanitation, waste management, and environmental stewardship.

“The responsibility to properly dispose off garbage primarily lies with the individual generating that garbage.” Soroti City Environment Officer during today’s radio talk show on addressing the state of environment in , a discussion organized by youth participants under CEMCOD’s Neighborhood Environment Watch. Soroti city currently produces 165 tones of waste per day with a collection rate of only 14.2% (20.7 tones per day). The youth are asking: Where is the rest of the waste being dumped?

Hate Speech thrives where misinformation, stereotypes and prejudice go unchallenged.

This International Day for Countering Hate Speech, CEMCOD celebrates the power of Media and Information Literacy to foster critical thinking, challenge harmful narratives and promote respectful dialogue.

Over the past several weeks, we've moved from planning to action by laying a strong foundation for meaningful youth-led environmental engagement and community participation.

CEMCOD’s Neighborhood Environment Watch (NEW) project for the Soroti and Tororo cohorts is tasking shape with so much excitement and enthusiasm.

So far, we have:
âś… Signed partnership agreements with municipal and City Authorities to support implementation.
âś… Selected, confirmed and onboarded passionate youth participants.
âś… Conducted project orientation and digital literacy training to equip young people with the skills needed to drive change.
âś… Launched radio talk shows and begun documenting youth-led community stories that spotlight local environmental challenges and solutions.

Together with our partners, we are fostering a new generation of environmental champions committed to creating cleaner, healthier and more sustainable communities.

It is yet another milestone, thanks to Soroti City Council for stepping forward to embrace the Neighborhood Environment Watch (NEW) project through signing of an MoU with CEMCOD recently.

While CEMCOD will build capacity, and lead youth and community engagements, Soroti City Council has committed to listening, responding, and supporting youth innovation to address common issues like waste management, drainage systems, and climate change among others.
Imagine communities not just receiving information about environmental sustainability and climate impacts , but actively shaping solutions.

We are super excited and look forward to jointly transforming our cities and communities.

We are pleased to announce that on April 21, 2026, Centre for Media Literacy and Community Development (CEMCOD) and Tororo Municipal Council formalized a strategic partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to implement the Neighbourhood Environment Watch (NEW) Project.

This collaboration provides a structured framework to advance:
• Environmental protection and climate change mitigation
• Youth and community participation in governance
• Strengthened accountability and transparency in service delivery
• Inclusive dialogue between citizens and local leadership

The NEW Project reflects a shared commitment to people-centered development, leveraging community engagement and media approaches to drive sustainable environmental outcomes.

We look forward to working closely with local leaders, youth, and community members to deliver impactful and measurable change in Tororo Municipality.
