Yesterday, we had the privilege of presenting on mental health at the first quarterly meeting of the Guidance and Counseling Technical Working Group, held at the WHO offices in Kololo.

Organized by the Ministry of Education and Sports, the meeting brought together key stakeholders committed to supporting learners’ mental health in schools.

Our presentation shared challenges, opportunities, and lessons learned over the past 3–4 months. We emphasized:

-The urgent need to improve mental health literacy among learners, teachers, and parents.
-Strengthening referral and linkage networks to ensure timely support.
-Prioritizing early detection of mental distress rather than waiting for fully developed disorders.
-Generating localized evidence, tools, and approaches tailored to the Ugandan context.

We were encouraged by the collective commitment in the room and look forward to continued collaboration to ensure every learner has access to the mental health support they need.

Last Friday, we concluded the week by hosting a VSLA (Village Savings and Loan Association) leaders' training specifically for young mothers at our offices. The session was designed to equip these leaders with the essential skills needed to manage their groups effectively, navigate internal conflicts, and maintain rigorous record-keeping and financial management standards.
During the training, leaders shared their best practices, allowing their peers to learn from their successes and adapt these strategies for their own groups' growth. Participants also worked together to identify practical solutions for common challenges.
The training included representatives from the following groups: Kiyunga, Busalamu, Walibo, Nakabaale, Kaluuba, Buwaya, Gonza, Buyengo, Matuumu, Mbulamuti, and Namwendwa.

Investing For Tomorrow

Last week, over 143 participants were trained in financial literacy basics focusing on empowering them with essential money management skills with support from Zoe Empowers.

✅ Smart Budgeting: Learning how to track income, plan expenses, and make informed decisions about their money.

✅ Building Savings: Understanding the value of putting money aside for future needs and dreams.

✅ Achieving Financial Goals: Guiding them in setting realistic and aspirational financial targets, and creating a roadmap to reach them.

By providing these tools, we're not just teaching about money; we're fostering resilience, self-reliance, and the ability to confidently navigate their future. Every child deserves the chance to thrive, and financial literacy is a key stepping stone.

While many tailoring programs focus exclusively on sewing, they often overlook machine maintenance and repair-frequently due to outdated gender stereotypes regarding technical skills.
At our training centers in Nakabaale, Matuumu, Naluwoli and Namwendwa, we bridge this gap by equipping out-of-school girls with both tailoring expertise and essential maintenance skills which include proper threading and bobbin installation, cleaning and oiling the machine, needle replacement and tension adjustment and basic troubleshooting and simple repairs.
We believe that true empowerment comes from understanding both the craft and the tool.

Male involvement in our community dialogues has always been minimal, as men often state they are too busy to attend. However, the most recent dialogue in Balawoli community surprisingly achieved about 90 percent male attendance. Much of the discussion centered on the perceived unfairness of the justice system, which many felt favored females.

A police officer at the dialogue explained several forms of s*xual violence, provided guidance on how to respond to different cases, highlighted the challenges law enforcement officers face when handling s*xual violence cases, and specified where to report if they felt their cases had been handled unjustly.

"Let’s talk about mental health”.

Mental health matters to everyone. Just as we care for our bodies, we also need to care for our minds. This involves managing stress and anxiety, clearly communicating our emotions, building resilience in tough times, and offering emotional support to struggling friends and family. These are the key areas being emphasized in our mental health classes during our vocational education sessions in Matuumu, Namwendwa and Nakabaale communities.
