This week, our leading in-house engineers visited St Stephen’s in Budondo, Uganda, to learn some techniques on how to make our interlocking, compressed earth blocks even more environmentally friendly.

HYT Uganda was delighted to welcome the Director, Mr Russell Matcham, on site in Northern Uganda.

Russell was happy with the progress at Midia Primary School, where HYT is building a 3 classroom block, and a toilet block for each of boys, girls and staff.

Life after the Forest 🌳

Edson is pictured here in front of his current home in Rurangura settlement, where he has lived with his family since his tribe were expelled from Bwindi Forest in the 1990s.

In the next image, Edson and his family are standing in front of what will soon become their new home - a five room bungalow built by HYT.

We are excited to see the difference that a permanent shelter will make to Edson’s family.

It is great to see these new outdoor learning spaces in good use in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement!

Last year, HYT created a sustainable ‘oasis’ in 10 refugee schools to improve learning environments for children. Each school received 25 sustainable-brick benches, and over 30 shade-providing trees. 🌳 🧱

We also added 6 new rainwater tanks in those schools where availability of water was below the national standard.

First glance at their new classroom! 🎓📒

These refugee children had not had a real classroom since they fled the DRC four years previously. This picture captures their first glimpse of their brand new learning space, in Kyaka II refugee settlement.

HYT is proud to be building a world where being a refugee is a chapter, not the whole story.

“With my wages I have been able to support my children through a better life.”

These are the words of Jacob Abui, a refugee from South Sudan, who was a star performer in HYT’s first training project in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement. He has been working with HYT ever since.

Jacob says, “The living standard of me and my family has really changed since I started work with HYT. I thank HYT for uplifting me and my family this far already.”

HYT is so grateful to Jacob for all the great work he has helped us to achieve.

In this week leading up to Refugee Day, HYT celebrates our role in giving a hand up, not a hand out.

‘Asylum means more than the absence of violence; it is the right to access shelter, education and dignity.’

Moses was the recipient of a new, sustainable toilet in December 2024. He suffers from severe visual impairment, and inadequate sanitation facilities seriously jeopardised his access to dignified living.

HYT will keep working to protect and rebuild the lives of refugees and asylum seekers in Uganda’s settlements.

Low-Carbon Innovation or LEGO for Adults? 🧱
Interlocking Stabilised Soil Blocks (ISSBs) require:

• no mortar between courses
• no firing process that consumes firewood
• no transportation to site, eliminating breakages in transit
• no external plastering, drastically reducing cement usage

On this World Environment Day, let’s keep promoting sustainable innovations in construction. 🪴👷🏾‍♀️

HYT recently found a creative way to use even LESS carbon in our toilets for refugee families: bamboo baskets.

Instead of using concrete culverts to keep the toilet pits intact, HYT employed the help of local refugees to make and install bamboo baskets.

In doing so, HYT was able to reduce significantly the use of embedded carbon, while providing income for refugee masons!
