Jinja Car Free Day is back!

Cycling out of Poverty - CooP-Africa is proud to once again be part of this year’s Jinja Car Free Day.

We call on everyone in Jinja and beyond to join us as we cycle, walk , skate, play, connect, and experience our streets in a different way.

Car Free Day is a chance to champion streets that work for everyone, regardless of age, ability or how we choose to move.

Together, let’s create more inclusive, healthy, safe and livable cities.

What makes a Cycling Club more than a group of students with bicycles?

Leadership, responsibility and practical skills.

This week in Kamuli district, we visited partner schools to strengthen Bike4School Cycling Clubs.

These clubs help learners keep their bicycles roadworthy, promote safe cycling and create spaces where students learn from one another while taking ownership of their mobility. They also nurture leadership and environmental stewardship through activities led by the learners themselves.

Every strong Cycling Club helps more students keep riding, keep learning, and make the most of the opportunities a bicycle brings.

At Cycling out of Poverty - CooP-Africa, we are proud to stand alongside Enabel in Uganda, the Ministry of Health in Uganda , Babies and Mothers Alive (BAMA), and the Embassy of Belgium in Uganda in strengthening community health through mobility.

We know from years of experience that reliable transport is a game‑changer for Community Health Workers. With our bicycles, repair training, and a sustainable upkeep system, health workers in Kamuli can reach more households, respond faster, and support mothers and families with the care they deserve.

This Bike4Care programme is more than mobility, it is dignity, access, and opportunity. We are grateful for Belgium’s commitment to practical, long‑term solutions that improve daily life in rural communities.

Together, we pedal toward better mobility, better access, and better health for all.

This week, our team has been on the road across Adjumani district visiting Dzaipi, Lewa, Pagirinya, Ofua and Adjumani Secondary Schools to strengthen the Bike4School Cycling Clubs!

Together with students and teacher patrons, the clubs confirmed their club leaders, developed activity plans and took part in a refresher session on bicycle maintenance. The cycling clubs equip students with the knowledge and responsibility to care for their bicycles, promote safe cycling and lead activities that encourage peer learning and environmental stewardship within their schools.

Huge thanks to the school communities in Adjumani for the warm welcome and continued partnership! Onward to Kamuli and Kyegegwa next.

CooP-Uganda trains local mechanics

This week in Kamuli, we took another important step toward long-term sustainability.

Five community mechanics completed hands-on training to carry out major repairs, ensuring the bicycles serving Kamuli schools and Community Health Workers stay on the road for years to come.

Each mechanic was equipped with a full set of mechanical tools and will be identified by a "tear drop" mark a simple but powerful symbol that tells the community exactly who to turn to for trusted, quality repairs.

When a learner's bicycle breaks down on the way to school or a community health worker needs their bicycle running to reach a patient, help is now close by.

Cycling towards better health services and equal learning opportunities, one community at a time.

Bicycle distribution to CHWs in Kamuli.

This week, 40 Community Health Workers from Nankandulo HCIV and Namwendwa HCIV in Kamuli District received bicycles. The health workers also took part in practical training on bicycle maintenance and basic repairs, equipping them with the skills to keep their bicycles safe, reliable and operational.

For Community Health Workers, a bicycle is more than a means of transport. It reduces travel time between households, expands the reach of essential health services and strengthens connections between communities and healthcare facilities. With improved mobility, health workers are better positioned to support maternal and child health, conduct follow-up visits, provide health education, and respond to emerging health needs.

Investing in sustainable transport for health workers is an investment in stronger, more accessible healthcare systems and healthier communities.

Today, we train five local mechanics who will provide technical support for bicycles used by both health centres and schools, helping to ensure long-term sustainability at community level.

Implemented by CooP-Uganda in partnership with Enabel, BAMA, the Ministry of Health, Belgium and European Union.

728 bicycles distributed, hundreds of school journeys transformed!

This week in Kamuli marked an important milestone for the Bicycle Empowerment Programme.

With the distribution of bicycles in Kamuli district, a total of 728 WeLearn-WeTeach bicycles have now been provided to learners across Kyegegwa, Adjumani and Kamuli.

Behind every bicycle is a learner with greater opportunities to reach school on time, participate fully in class and spend less energy on the journey to education.

While the bicycles have reached three districts, their impact will be felt in hundreds of communities and classrooms for years to come.

728 bicycles. Three districts. Countless opportunities to learn.
