From Stigma to Smiles this Women's History Month

This month, as we celebrate women's achievements, a story being shared time and again holds immense value: the power of a genuine smile and the courage to normalize menstruation.

For too long, periods have been whispered about, hidden in brown bags, or treated as a taboo subject in professional spaces. But true inclusion means creating an environment where every girl and woman feels seen, supported, and comfortable in her own skin.

When we normalize menstruation, we aren't just talking about biology; we are talking about:
✅ Dignity: Ensuring access to products without shame.
✅ Productivity: Supporting employees through cycle-related challenges with empathy, not silence.
✅ Culture: Building workplaces where "feminine health" is part of the wellness conversation, not a secret.

Let's make this month count by turning those whispers into open conversations. Let's ensure that the most valuable story we share is one where every girl can face her day with confidence and a smile, unburdened by stigma.

Science meets love.

There is a profound science hidden in the simplicity of this moment: a mother carrying her baby close to her chest.

While it looks like a simple act of affection, from an Early Childhood Development perspective, this is where the foundational architecture of the brain is being built.

At this stage, physical closeness provides the co-regulation necessary for a nervous system to thrive. Specifically, this connection:
🔹 Lowers cortisol levels.
🔹 Regulates heart rate through the caregiver's rhythm.
🔹 Creates the emotional safety required for optimal cognitive growth.

We often worry that holding a baby too much might "spoil" them. Developmental research tells us the opposite is true.

This image captures the essence of "serve and return" interactions without a single word being spoken. When a child feels secure enough to explore because their safe base is right there, it builds trust and resilience. This is not just bonding; it is a critical prerequisite for future learning and emotional regulation.
But supporting moments like this requires more than individual effort.

It demands a societal shift in how we value early parenting. It challenges us to consider:
✅ How can workplaces accommodate this crucial closeness?
✅ Are our parental leave policies sufficient?
✅ How do we destigmatize baby-wearing in professional spaces?

If we want to raise confident, emotionally intelligent children, we must champion the conditions that allow for secure attachment from the very beginning.

I'd love to hear your thoughts: How can we better support parents in balancing professional responsibilities with these critical developmental needs during the first year of life?

Uganda’s bold 2026 education reforms are set to transform foundational learning, and Right Path is proud to align with these forward-thinking changes!

The nation will reshape Early Childhood Learning, revamp Universal Primary Education (UPE), expand secondary schooling (including seed schools) with World Bank support, and activate a new TVET Council to strengthen vocational training. At Right Path, we’re actively integrating the National Curriculum Development Centre’s (NCDC) groundbreaking updates, designed to prioritize holistic, age-appropriate growth:

Gone are lengthy school days and homework; classes now run from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM with structured breaks, focusing all learning within the classroom. The outdated 2005 ECD framework has been replaced with a dynamic, competence-based curriculum featuring seven enriched learning areas (up from five). This modern approach introduces cursive handwriting in nursery to boost brain development and concentration, integrates mathematics (replacing numeracy) with earlier foundational concepts, and teaches English alongside local languages, all while maintaining play-based exploration.

New domains like Spiritual & Moral Development, Physical Health & Nutrition, Environmental Interaction (blending basic science and social studies), and Personal & Social Development ensure children build character, empathy, and practical life skills. Content is meticulously tailored: Baby Class focuses on tracing and cursive for neural growth; Middle Class blends numbers with creativity; and Top Class develops sentence construction to seamlessly transition to primary school.

Every change centers on balance: rigorous yet joyful learning, skill-building that doesn't sacrifice play, and cultural relevance alongside global readiness. As educators, we’re committed to making these reforms a reality, nurturing resilient, well-rounded learners ready for tomorrow.

Let’s champion education that grows with the child.

On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Uganda acknowledges the profound resilience of persons with disabilities who continue to drive change despite facing staggering systemic barriers. Yet, the 2025 theme, “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies,” forces us to confront an undeniable truth: the scale of unmet need is overwhelming. Millions face daily exclusion, from inaccessible healthcare facilities that deny life-saving treatment, to classrooms without ramps or Braille materials, to workplaces that discard qualified candidates solely due to disability.

Poverty rates among persons with disabilities remain triple the national average, while critical decisions about policies, budgets, and services are routinely made without their input. Uganda’s Disability Act exists, but without urgent, large-scale enforcement and investment, it remains a promise unfulfilled for the 1 in 7 Ugandans living with disability. This isn’t just a gap; it’s a national emergency demanding radical accountability.

True inclusion requires moving far beyond symbolic gestures to massive, coordinated action. We need legally enforced accessibility standards for all public infrastructure, universal design integrated into every school and hospital, and livelihood programs scaled to reach rural and urban communities equally. Current efforts reach only a fraction of those in need, while DPOs (Disabled Persons' Organizations) like NUDIPU champion solutions; however, government and private sector investment remains critically insufficient.

As the global disability rights movement demands: “Nothing about us, without us.” This means resourcing DPOs as equal partners in policy design, allocating dedicated budget lines for accessibility retrofits, and auditing institutions for compliance with inclusion. When a child accesses education without barriers or a job seeker secures dignified work, it signals progress; however, until these become universal realities, we acknowledge that Uganda’s commitment must match the overwhelming scale of the need.

Present parenting is characterized by intentional and attuned engagement that extends beyond physical proximity and acts as the invisible architect of early brain development. During the brain’s most explosive growth phase, responsive interactions such as sustained eye contact during play, validating a child’s frustration, or narrating everyday moments trigger "serve-and-return" exchanges.

These seemingly small acts biologically wire foundational skills: cognitive flexibility, emotional regulation, and secure attachment. Neuroscience confirms this isn’t just nurturing; it’s strategic wiring for lifelong resilience, language mastery, and executive function skills proven to predict academic achievement, mental health stability, and relationship success.

In an era of digital distractions and relentless productivity demands, choosing presence is a high-return-on-investment, not indulgence. This year’s 16 Days of Activism theme, “Unite to end digital violence against women and girls”, sharpens our focus: Digital safety is non-negotiable for caregivers (disproportionately women) to show up fully for these critical interactions.

When mothers and female caregivers face online harassment, surveillance, or abuse, their capacity for attuned presence fractures. As Harvard’s Center on the Developing Child underscores, protecting early development requires dismantling these barriers. For educators, HR leaders, and policymakers: normalizing present parenting through flexible work policies, community support, and digital safety initiatives isn’t merely compassionate, it’s an economic imperative. Let’s redesign systems to safeguard caregivers and children.

We must act now, not just to protect caregivers from digital violence, but to fiercely defend the sacred space where children’s brains are built. Demand policies that prioritize presence, including flexible work arrangements, digital safety shields, and trauma-informed support. Because when we secure a caregiver’s peace, we ensure a child’s future. Join me in making "present parenting" non-negotiable. Your leadership today architects resilience for generations.

Proud of the work our team is doing to normalize menstrual health as a cornerstone of dignity and equity in Uganda, and beyond. This isn’t optional. It’s justice.

For generations, menstruation has been cloaked in silence, stigma, and myth, spoken of only in whispers, if at all. This culture of shame left millions of girls and women without the knowledge, resources, or support to manage their periods with dignity. But silence is no longer an option.

In Uganda, the data speaks clearly: 28% of schoolgirls miss class every month due to menstrual-related challenges. For this reason, they lack access to affordable sanitary products. Because their schools lack private, clean, and functional WASH facilities. Because embarrassment and misinformation still outweigh open, supportive dialogue.

The consequences are real: missed lessons, lost confidence, interrupted education, and too often, girls dropping out altogether. This isn’t just a health or gender issue. It’s a barrier to inclusive education, economic participation, and human rights.

At Right Path, we’re moving beyond temporary fixes. Yes, we provide menstrual products, but more importantly, we shift mindsets. Through initiatives like our GirlCare Game, we create brave spaces where girls learn with confidence, and boys become allies who challenge stigma and champion dignity.

Real change happens when everyone steps up:

→ When schools install gender-sensitive sanitation infrastructure.
→ When governments embed menstrual equity into policy and budgets.
→ When development partners invest in locally led, inclusive solutions.
→ When communities break taboos through open, respectful conversation.

Advancing menstrual health isn’t charity, it’s justice. And it’s a responsibility we all share.

Let’s stop managing menstruation in the margins. Let’s bring it into the mainstream—where it belongs.

Anger isn’t the enemy; it’s information.

Helping children manage their anger isn’t about silencing their emotions. It’s about guiding them to understand and express those feelings in constructive ways.

Anger often acts as a signal, pointing to unmet needs like safety, fairness, or connection. Yet too often, children’s outbursts are misread as defiance and met with discipline instead of support.

When adults respond with patience, empathy, and simple questions like, “What’s really bothering you?”, they help children name their emotions and build the vocabulary to express them, not explode them.

This kind of compassionate presence lays the foundation for lifelong resilience and healthy relationships.

By nurturing emotional regulation, we equip children to navigate conflict, practice empathy, and protect their mental well-being. These skills improve classrooms, strengthen families, and create inclusive spaces where every child can learn and grow with dignity.

Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or community leader, your calm response in a heated moment can turn frustration into a powerful opportunity for growth.

At RIGHT PATH, our Girlcare Initiative is redefining menstrual health in Uganda, not as a taboo, but as a cornerstone of dignity, education, and empowerment.

In communities where fewer than 1 in 4 girls complete lower secondary school, Girlcare is breaking cycles of stigma and inequality. Through dynamic behavior-change sessions, community mobilization, and our interactive Girlcare Game, we’re sparking open, honest conversations that normalize menstruation and uplift girls’ voices.

Girls gain the knowledge, confidence, and support to manage their menstrual health with pride and stay in school.

This isn’t just a program. It’s a movement shifting mindsets, transforming communities, and securing brighter futures, one girl at a time.

At RIGHT PATH, we believe menstrual hygiene is far more than access to products; it’s a fundamental pillar of dignity, equity, and opportunity for girls. Through our Girlcare initiative, we go beyond pads and supplies to advocate for safe environments in schools and communities across Uganda. We work alongside local leaders, parents, teachers, and girls themselves to reshape harmful attitudes, dismantle stigma, and foster environments where menstruation is understood, respected, and supported.

By ensuring access to clean spaces and strong peer and mentor support networks, Girlcare directly links menstrual health to educational equity. When girls aren’t held back by shame, fear, or a lack of infrastructure, they stay in school, participate fully, and pursue their potential with confidence.

Our holistic approach weaves together menstrual health education, sustainable resources, behavior change, and community mobilization to create lasting impact. This is how we advance our vision: a world where menstruation never limits a girl’s right to learn, lead, and thrive, and where every educated girl becomes a catalyst for positive change in her family, community, and beyond. Every child, no matter where they’re born, deserves to grow up safe, respected, and full of possibility.

At Right Path, we’re passionately dedicated to championing the rights of children in Uganda’s most marginalized communities. Our mission is clear: to dismantle the barriers that rob children of dignity, opportunity, and protection, and replace them with supportive, empowering environments where every child can thrive.

We believe lasting change begins within communities themselves. That’s why we use a rights-based, community-driven approach: training local support groups, strengthening child protection systems, and fostering self-reliance. By centering the voices and strengths of those we serve, we help children connect with their identities, their communities, and the natural world, while ensuring access to essential care, services, and justice.

None of this is possible alone. We actively seek collaboration with organizations, donors, policymakers, and advocates who share our vision of a Uganda where every child can fulfill their potential.

👉 If this resonates with you, we’d love to connect.
