Highlights of our Annual Charity Walk from Jinja to Iganga on Saturday, 29 November 2025.

We would like to say a special thank you to all who participated, and donated towards our cause.

It takes a community, to keep a girl in school.

Friends of Luuka Foundation held its annual charity walk on Saturday, 29 November. This year’s route covered 45 km from Jinja to Iganga, a change from last year’s 80 km stretch from Kampala to Kayabwe (the Equator).
We were joined by 42 participants, each completing a distance of their choice. At the finish line, we were warmly received by our Patron and the General Secretary, Mr. and Mrs. Kanyali.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all the participants, the well-wishers who sponsored kilometres, and the organisations that partnered with us to make the event a success.

Friends of Luuka Foundation held its annual charity walk on Saturday, 29th November. As a non-profit organisation, we rely on the generosity of partners, organisations, and well-wishers to make our fundraisers and projects possible.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to TMR International Hospital – Naalya and TMR Golden Living for their generous contribution of medical supplies. Their support strengthened our first aid preparedness and ensured that participants received timely care throughout the walk, greatly enhancing the overall safety and coordination of the event.

We look forward to continued collaboration as we advance our mission of keeping girls in school through improved menstrual health hygiene

A Friend of Luuka - Cathy Maweu from France, donated uniforms for 25 girls in Bugonoka Primary School. The girls who were chosen had been attending school in their home wear. In the video, you see the before, and after receiving their uniforms.

Ps: I love these videos because of their rawness. When we are out in the field, scripts are a total by the way 😂😂

Our General Secretary - Mrs Margaret Kanyali handing out sanitary pads to P7 girls during a recent outreach in Budhabangula and Busala Primary Schools.

This intervention ensures that the girls are able to comfortably sit for their Primary Leaving Exams without worrying about access to sanitary towels incase menstruation happens during the exam period.

It was a happy day for Students at Bugonoka Primary School - Luuka District, when they received The Friends of Luuka team who had brought donations from their well wishers: Ben Ngie in the US, and Cathy Maweu in France.

A total of 25 girls received school uniforms, P7 candidates received Mathematical sets, 25 students received crocs, and P6 & P7 girls received sanitary pads.

The recipients of these donations had been attending school without uniforms and shoes; while most of the P7 candidates did not have Mathematical sets that are a critical component in Maths lessons.

There is still dire need especially for shoes, for the school going children. We are always grateful to participate in such interventions as they resonate with our main intention - keeping a Child in School.

Day 1 of the 4 days training session on how to make reusable sanitary towels using sewing machines. Previously, we have been having trainings on how to do so manually, which proved to be a slower and cumbersome process.

We would like to thank everyone who donated during our Walk for pads last year; your contributions have enabled us acquire the necessary machinery and materials to start us off on this new journey of self sufficiency (making our own reusable pads vs buying) through cost effectiveness.

In the pictures herein, the ladies are learning how to operate a manual overlap machine, and cutting out the pad design on a cardboard box that will be used as a stencil.

Our Publicity Officer - Jennifer, participated in the Hike along The Nile initiative organised by Heta Vocational School in Jinja, to raise both awareness and funds for purchasing reusable sanitary pads for 274 school going girls. We were glad to note that they shared our sentiment of keeping a girl child in school through Menstrual Hygiene Management.

We thank the Proprietor Helen Kirunda, for the invite and look forward to many more collaborations of the same.

We started off this year's activities with a training session for Three Hundred Girls (300) from Five (5) Schools in Luuka District.

The girls get a chance to have candid talks with the trainers about reproductive health, alongside learning how to manually sew reusable sanitary pads. Each girl received a menstrual health kit after the training, and were also provided with lunch (the training takes upto 4 hours).

We are always grateful to our partners and welwishers, who make such activities possible by their generous contribution of both time, and funds.

Friends of Luuka Foundation trainer Salima, in collaboration with Worship Harvest Church; undertook a reusable pads manual training in the slum area of Kiswa in Bugolobi. A total of 25 women and girls participated in the training.

We are always glad for opportunities to reach out to both women and girls, in other areas other than our base (Luuka), because we believe in Menstrual Health Hygiene for all.

Friends of Luuka Foundation wishes to thank everyone who came out to support the Charity walk for pads - Luuka girls. This event would not have been successful without your unwavering support: financially, physically, and emotionally.

A special thank you goes out to our sponsors, companies that donated towards the cause, and individuals who supported financially.

An extra special thank you to the walkers who braved the pelting rain, and made the 80km journey to The Equator. It was not a mean fête and thank you, for the sacrifice. Secondly, to Gejja Women Foundation for the commitment and mentorship that has added value to us as Friends of Luuka Foundation, and cemented our resolve to continue advocating for better Menstrual Hygiene Management for underprivileged girls.
