The Bulindi chimpanzees are one of many imperilled chimpanzee communities clinging to survival in disappearing habitat surrounding the Budongo Forest Reserve in Western Uganda. Dr Matt McLennan began studying the chimpanzees at Bulindi in 2006. Since then almost all their forest home has been converted to farmland, particularly for to***co and rice cash crops, forcing the chimpanzees into competit

ion and conflict with local people. The photos, videos, news and stories featured on this page aim to introduce the individual chimps in the community, and illustrate how these remarkable and resilient great apes are adapting to a rapidly-changing landscape surrounded by people and agriculture. This image showing 7 Bulindi males traversing a busy main road is a far cry from a natural forest environment where we imagine wild chimpanzees spend their lives. Yet in Bulindi and other areas in western Uganda, chimpanzee habitats have been transformed by human development and land use changes. This remarkable scene is a daily occurence at Bulindi.

New Bulindi Babies - A baby boy for Kabagenyi!

Kabagenyi is a young female who migrated to Bulindi in January 2023, when she was about 10 years old. We don't know her birth community, but she arrived from the direction of Budongo Forest to the north.

Kabagenyi gave birth to her first offspring in June this year. In August, the chimpanzees were affected by a severe flu outbreak. Kabagenyi's 2-month old infant became weak and we feared the worst. Happily, he pulled through and is now doing well.

NEW BULINDI BABIES! Part 1 - A baby girl for Lucia.

It's been a season of new arrivals for the Bulindi chimpanzees, with 3 of the community's 6 females giving birth in the last few months. A fourth female looks set to deliver in the next few weeks.

First was Lucia, who gave birth to a healthy female infant in April - the same month that she turned 9 years old. 9 years is exceptionally young for a female chimpanzee to give birth in the wild! Females in the wild usually deliver for the first time when they're about 13 to 15 years old.

Lucia is a natal Bulindi female, who never migrated to another community. It seems she became pregnant before she had a chance to leave Bulindi to look for other chimps!
