Human Rights Focus (HURIFO) is a Ugandan civil societal, non-governmental, non-partisan, non stock, non racial, non-religious and non-profit making human rights organisation established in 1994 with a country-wide mandate. rn Uganda, a region whose people have experienced gross human rights violations and untold sufferring. This has been done by working closely with the community at various levels to raise the level of their awareness on human rights, and be able to stand up and defend their rights as well as of other victims or the less privileged. The overall goal of HURIFO is:
“To enhance and strengthen an enabling environment and use of appropriate mechanisms for protecting, improving, and promoting human rights in Uganda in particular; and the world over.”
In pursuit of this goal, HURIFO will work towards the following strategic objectives over the period 2010-2014:
•To enhance awareness and respect of human rights.
•Facilitate implementation of human rights mechanisms for realization of enjoyment of rights.
•Establish human rights clubs and programmes in all post primary institutions in Acholi region.
•Improve and consolidate networking with other organisations/ institutions.
•Mainstream gender, HIV/AIDS, Environment and Disability into HURIFO Programmes.
•Strengthen HURIFO research capacity on topical human rights issues.
•Build HURIFO institutional capacity for effective and efficient implementation of programmes.
•Enforce human rights and promote reconciliation among individuals, communities and institutions.
•Empower the populace, the vulnerable people, marginalised and illiterate to demand and enjoy their human rights. HURIFO shall also aim for the following institutional objectives;
•To consolidate and expand resource base to ensure sustainability.
•To acquire own home/premises.
•To strengthen the capacity of HURIFO to efficiently and effectively promote human rights and good governance, justice and accountability.
