Francis Community Institute (SFCI) is a community based organization in Gulu District, Northern Uganda. It was started in 2011 as a response to numerous challenges which victims and survivors continue to face as a result of the conflict which devastated Northern Uganda for over two decades. SFCI’s vision, mission and objectives are inspired by the life of St. Francis of Assisi; a rich young man w
ho abandoned his life of plenty and comfort, and chose to live a poor life in solidarity with the poor and destitute. Under the inspiration of St. Francis of Assisi, SFCI works to reverse the negative impacts of the civil war that ravaged Northern Uganda for over twenty years. The civil war, which started in 1986, had disastrous impacts upon the population, including the displacement of close to 1.8 million people and the destruction and loss of property and lives. In addition, close to 38,000 children were abducted by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) to serve as child-soldiers, s*x slaves and porters . As a result of the conflict, several people at the moment continue to live in distressful conditions. SFCI implements projects and activities aimed at addressing the impacts of the conflict and improving the lives of children, youth and other vulnerable people affected by conflict. The Institute provides Health and Psychosocial Support (HPS), Education and Literacy support (EL), Livelihoods & Community Empowerment (LCE) support and other basic needs for vulnerable people in Northern Uganda.
