According to the United Nations, the LRA in Northern Uganda, was responsible for more than 100,000 deaths, the abduction of 60,000 to 100,000 children, and the displacement of as many as 2.5 million people, between 1987 and 2012. Abducted women and girls we forced to become slaves and “wives” to the LRA leaders, suffering repeated rapes and sexual assaults, while young boys were trained to be child soldiers and forced to murder or maim or sexually assault others, sometimes even their own family members.

Art Therapy with the Youth Born of War, at Aruu Falls, Northern Uganda. Art offers us a way to express difficult things that are hard for us to put into words. Creative self-expression is part of the healing process. You don’t have to be an expert painter, you just need to explore your emotions in a visual way. Our participants did some really stunning healing artwork.

“Leave No Child Behind: Strengthening Youth Leaders to Advocate for an End to the Discrimination and Exclusion of Uganda’s Children Born of War (CBOW),” This initiative aims to address the systemic discrimination and exclusion faced by CBOW, now Youth. Born from the sexual violence and forced enslavement of abducted mothers during the Northern Uganda conflict, CBOW have been stigmatized and denied basic human rights, including identity documents and civic rights, resulting in gendered harms such as sexual exploitation, early marriages, economic marginalization, and statelessness. The Youth Advocacy Network led the proceedings with passion, creativity and intelligence.

Ochan, now a student at African Leadership Academy, shares how his life was impacted by the war. We met on the bus from Nairobi to Kampala. I was heading to Gulu to start our Born to Shine training project and he was heading back to school after his internship with a NPO in Kenya. He is passionate about wildlife and his studies and work is about using technology to protect the animals.
