*Oakland Zoo and New Nature Foundation Team Up to Connect Lions and Communities: The Stove Program and Nature Center introduced in Queen Elizabeth National Park have a tangible purpose: using less firewood reduces people’s time in the “bush” while decreasing pressure on habitats. Learning about the important role of lions and hippos in the ecosystem and how to reduce negative encounters endows people with choice and control. Inspiring change on the individual and local level, community members gain power over their situation, possible resolutions, and the future. Beyond utilitarian needs, NNF and Oakland Zoo’s partnership is saving rare species and places of beauty by bringing more harmony to this corner of the world.
