In many communities in Uganda, women are socially not expected to contest with men on the same electoral positions, such as directly elected MP post. The law however, provides for equality of all genders in elections, as stipulated in Articles 21, 32, 33,38, and 59 of the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda (as amended)

Key to note is that both women & men are capable leaders, & have equal rights to participate in elections both as candidates and voters, at all levels. Therefore, any biases or prejudices against somebody on the basis of gender are unfounded and thus illegal.

Together with Evidence And Methods Lab, we are increasing civic awareness of electoral laws & provisions to enhance fair participation of both males and females in the 2025/26 general elections in Uganda.

Yesterday, with support from the UN Women Uganda, RFPJ convened women-led dialogues with elections stakeholders in Kasese and Bundibugyo districts to analyse and document emerging election-related conflicts, foster mutual understanding and develop actionable strategies managing conflicts that emerged during the most recent political party primary elections, and forge ways of preventing and mitigating such conflicts as the country gears up for the 2026 general elections.

These meetings were safe spaces for open discussion among warring political actors, security agencies, electoral bodies, civil society, community leaders, and the media. Stakeholders pointed out favoritism, voter bribery, regionalism and tribalism, and voter intimidation as leading factors in the electoral violence that happened during primaries. From the meeting, stakeholders committed themselves to sensitize the masses and collaborate with civil society and security to ensure peaceful 2026 general elections in Kasese and Bundibugyo districts.

We continue to hold such stakeholder meetings across the Rwenzori region to mitigate election-related conflicts, empower stakeholders with the necessary information and skills to intervene in conflicts, strengthen conflict management and referral pathways, and above all, empower women to be at the frontline of conflict management processes.
